Blurred lines (No this has nothing to do with Miley) :P

Recently I read up on someone's post about his game and someone mentioned how war games are techinically off topic at BGDF. This caused me to reflect a bit on what a wargame really is. There are games that are obviously wargames, like ASL and such games. There are other games that are obviously not a wargame, like Ticket To Ride. Then there are games that blur the lines between what is a wargame, and what is a german/euro game, miniatures, etc. An example of this is "A Few Acres of Snow," that has many seemingly Euro mechanics, but it is about war and conquest.

So what must a game have, or lack, before you say it is a pure wargame?

Never heard that in 2 years...

I have been a member on this site for more than 2 years - and I have never heard anyone mention that *war games* are off topic on BGDF... For pete's sake we were just discussing "Fog Of War" a couple weeks back... If that's not *war game* discussion, then what is???

I'm not saying it's enforced...

Here is the link to it.

Now I'm not saying that this is enforced since I was reading a topic about an airship game where someone even mentioned it wasn't enforced. The link provided and the topic I read though got me thinking why are wargames even considered off topic since most wargames are board games, euro games, miniatures games, card games, etc.

And I was thinking I was too tough...

I posted a reply mentioning that these fora are for *DESIGNERS* more specifically people that are interested in the MAKING of board games. I mean it's in the title of the website... in BIG, BOLD letters...

A newbie DOUBLE posted the same identical post saying he wanted feedback from *Board Gamers* (not designers) and to fill out his survey which was about *game playing*.

Personally I found it RUDE to post such a message. It's probably as bad as the guy posting about "Free Online Games - that you can earn money playing"... How appropriate is that?!

But *wargames* being off-topic surprises me. Perhaps this was to avoid discussions about Warhammer 40k. People are still designing *wargames* on this site and like I said we discuss it and offer ideas... It's still a game... and the talk was about designing it.

We're in agreeance

I totally agree with you. I was completely baffled by the persons post about board gamers. He posted the exact same thing twice and because of such I just ignored it. I cheered your response though! I also agree with the post about free online games where you can earn money. This isn't a computer game forum. This isn't a forum about playing board games. We're here to design and to help others design.

I don't know a whole lot about Warhammer 40k mainly because of the money and time required for it, so I guess I don't understand why it would be desirable to avoid discussion of it? Is this to avoid the discussion of custom 40k figures? I mean, why are wargames even considered off topic really? (I do know it's not enforced nor do I want it enforced seeing as my main game would probably fall into this category of game)
