A collapsed tunnel

One

"There's a way through, over here." Your companion's voice fails to illicit a response as your mind focuses on the endless void repelling your flashlight's brilliance.

"Hand me your shovel!" the voice demands. You break free of your trance, and rush over to aid your friend. You hand over your shovel, and in no time, dirt begins sailing through the air.

A short time passes, carried by the constant digging. Again you focus on the long tunnel, the route not taken. Suddenly, the digging stops.

"The hole's big enough for me, so you shouldn't have any trouble." You respond by ending your watch, and scurrying into the hole. You writhe and wriggle to the end of the fresh tunnel, getting assistance to your feet, from your only companion.

"Do you smell that?" you inquire. "It smells like sulfur and glue."

Your friend has no chance to respond as a scaly mass of muscles slides into your path. Instinctively, you grab your pistol, and level it at the center of the mass. A tendril, resembling some amputated tendon erupts from the creature, grasping your friend's foot. He struggles to grab his hatchet and maintain his balance. The axe's cold blade is answered by an inhuman wail, followed by a shrill scream from your companion.

"My skin! It burns, oh god, it burns!" He continues his hatchet flailing struggle, as you aim your pistol and squeeze. Two bursts of flame and noise send new pain to the strange creature, met again with a shrill wail. A viscous, translucent fluid pours from the creatures wounds as a final hatchet blow causes a sharp breaking sound to echo from the sewer's walls.

More of the fluid sprays forth from the mass of muscles, covering the hands and face of your companion. The mass releases its hold, and slowly deflates. He screams and quickly tries to cover his wounds in the sick fluids of the sewers. Anything to relieve that burning pain.

His screams continue as white smoke begins to pour from his wounds. He begins choking on the smoke as you watch, helplessly, as your only companion begins melting like the beast he just defeated. His final cry causes your hair to rise, and your mind to remember.

Sorrow overwhelms you as you cry out, cursing the living hell you are forced to face. You approach your friend's remains, grabbing your shovel, a bag of strange dust, and a shotgun. The hatchet your companion handled so expertly, is now nothing more than a quickly eroding handle. You set out alone, still searching for a way to the surface.

Necrolux
Eventful Scenes

Every Scene encountered in Necrolux, defines a number of Event cards that occur within the confines of that Scene. Event cards are played in order, with the first one being drawn, then resolved, before the next Event is drawn.

The story above takes place in the "Collapsed Tunnel" Scene, which is a dead-end for any that do not have some sort of digging implement. As our shoveling companion demonstrated, the Scene can branch into new, unexplored locations. This is not without consequence, as the monstrous creature occurred as a result of an Event card. Normally the Collapsed Tunnel requires 1 Event card, every time you pass through it. In the event that you dig out the debris in the tunnel, an additional Event card is drawn, once.

The Event was a type of creature ambush, causing you to draw from the Creature deck as well. The narrative is an example of a "bad draw" from the Creature deck. The monster encountered, causes damage to anyone in melee range, every time it is damaged. The viscous fluid emitted from the monster is a type of acid, causing damage to most living creatures.

Now our hero is alone in the sewers, but with any luck, he will find another companion somewhere in the Creature deck. A new Scene card is drawn, and laid adjacent to the Collapsed Tunnel. What horrors lurk in the thick steam ahead?
