An overview of 2014 for me and game design

I really need to get on this. Been so busy updating Facebook and apparently NOTHING else, I should provide an überview of everything since the end of 2013. Here goes...

January 2014:
New Year greetings and the like. Some ambitious goals for ideas lightly strewn throughout. All was quiet.

February 2014:
After what felt like decades, I’m back at NUPUGA. Working out the scoring system...again. Posting and sharing board game related posts on ADLi Tumblr as well. Picked up a Stanley rolling toolbox which is now aptly named the ADLi Mobile Game Station. That was fun. Working on locking down gameplay factors for Broken Lance on top of play testing NUPUGA more with friends to work out the scoring before I release it for blind testing. Picked up a board game or two off CraigsList and that pretty much sums up Feb.

March 2014:
2 new game ideas; Junk Mail and A Ship Load of Bricks. Just game ideas at that moment so work required to sort out the appropriate mechanics were necessary. Was watching a lot of Korean and Chinese period flicks during this month which sparked a game design based on an ancient map seen in one of the flicks. The game (currently named Qi, pronounced 'chee') is a game of influence. Cardinal direction stamped dice are player tokens and you must navigate through the heavens to acquired and present the gods with gifts of the elements. More to come on that. Big news in the way of conventions. FanExpo 2014 sign up was just around the corner and ADLi is getting prepared to make another visit. Last year was an exhilarating experience and an eye opener. There are many gamers of all types and interests at fan cons and it’s not only the comic or manga or TV genres that drive con goers to purchase goods. Suffice to say, we got our spot reserved so the show is a go. Near the end of March, I started thinking heavily about travel games/micro games. This has put a new spin on some of the games I've conceived and led me into April with a new vision.

April 2014:
The StormGate Travel Edition was conceived, along with the possibility of selling a game or two at the show. Very exciting. This game literally consumed the whole month, and if I wasn't working on SG Travel Edition I was drafting tales of royalty besting each other in the courts of His and Her Majesty. April was also the birth of a new mini card game called Imperial Court -- at the time it was a 15 cards, 7 votes and a handful of contention are what’s in store for this travel card game -- Just finished the first round draft of rules for Imperial Court at that time. The game became my new obsession. Posted my thoughts and queries in BoardGameDesignForum and on Facebook and got some wonderful feedback.

May 2014:
Designed the first draft of cards and their functions for Imperial Court. The game was progressing faster than I had expected, but I realized I needed to go back to StormGate, NUPUGA and Word-a-bout to tidy them up (with instructions and how-to videos) for the convention. It's hard to put down a fun and simple idea. My sister loves the game. Play it every time I visit her. It has received some good feedback from acquaintances as well. Now I need to create the prototypes for blind testing.

Now we're in June and I've been trying to get free time to update game rules, do some play testing and work on packaging ideas for my games. Seeing as you are all caught up now, I hope I can maintain this going forward. Posting to FB, BGDF, BGG and the site blog is a tedium I wish I could automate, but alas it's part of sharing the good word. All my thoughts now are "Fan Expo, I'm not ready!!!" *sigh* Just have to keep powering through. No looking back.
