The Market at Kos - Ready to Play

Hello everyone,

My game "The Market at Kos" has been updated and reposted on the web. Check it out, print it out, and play it. Let me know how it goes and ask me if you have any questions.

Nuttiest Version Yet

I had gone through several versions of my game Rise of the Chieftian. It was getting better each time, but I some level I wasn't reasonating with it. It's not so much that it didn't meet my expectations, it's that I didn't know what my expectations were. I was wandering around theme and a vauge idea, and as I tested my game got pulled towards a conventional, "been done," kinda feel. So I went a few weeks without touching it.

“They don’t advertise for playtesters in the newspaper...”

Well, that could have gone better. It could have gone much, much worse too.
It’s Tuesday morning, and having spent a sleepless Sunday night downheartedly worrying about everything I’d done wrong, I collated the questionnaires compiled by my playtesters and realised that things weren’t quite as bad as I’d been thinking.

Hi from Clever Mojo Games

Hi There...My name is David. My brother, Fred, and I started designing family board games in January 2008 and we're in the middle of doing a short self-published run of our first game, Ogre Castle, right now. We also have two or three other games that are almost ready to give the short-run treatment. We're hoping the info here on BGDF, and the connections we'll make here, will help a couple of newbies like Fred and I out as we pursue our dream. I do not know if linking out of BGDF is kosher or not, but here's our fledgeling website if anyone's interested in giving us a look-see.

GTS 2009: Friday - Wrap-up and Lessons Learned

Friday, April 17th

GTS 2009: Thursday - "Hi, I'm a game designer. Who should I contact to submit game proposals?"

Thursday, April 16th
(Writing @ 11:10 AM on Friday)

Don't remember what I ate for breakf... Oh, yes I do. I was really happy with the ham, egg, and cheese croissant at Nosh (at the base of the South tower), but I chose not to do that and went to the big common room outside GAMA registration to wait for the continental-style buffet to be set up. This was a good move for several reasons:

1) It's a decent breakfast, and it's free (or at least included in the price of the ticket).

Describing this hobby...

So a dear friend is visiting for a few days, and she is curious about what I'm doing. And oddly, it is really really hard to explain.

Do Gamers Dream....?

Whew! It’s done!
For the last 3 weeks I have been getting 4 of my best games ready for playtesting. I have spent the last 5 days solidly printing out and laminating endless sheets of coloured card, then cutting out the bits and pieces I have so carefully crafted on them. Over 300 cards: more than 450 individual pieces – and that doesn’t even include the gameboards and cheat-sheets.

I really hope it’s worth it.

New Name

Well, it's spring of 09 now. It's a beautiful day here in the pacific northwest WA. This is my fifth month of being involved in the subject of board game design. I now have three game ideas that I am active and passionate about: The Dream, Beyond the Wheel, and Cesars Labyrinth. Plus two other ideas for expansions of The Dream. Which, are on the back burner way in the back of my mind at the moment.

GTS 2009: Wednesday – Swing batter-batter-batter, swing!

[Edited - Redactions removed]
7:30 PM on Wednesday, April 15th.

Meeting with Bucephalus was postponed from 11:30 AM to 6PM. although the pitch session at 6 PM went well (I pitched 15 games in 75 minutes, averaging exactly 5 minutes per game, with requests for five of them), I ended up missing out on a very special and unexpected dinner. Mike Hummel, a very old and dear friend, has appeared unexpectedly at the show, and I could have eaten dinner with him and some of his industry friends and associates if I'd finished by 6:30. It wasn't gonna happen, though.
