Playtest Notes: Hai Lung (or, Dispelling my Delusions)

Ah, the ideas seem so good in theory - in my head - as I write out the rules, but even playtesting with my daughters quickly dispels any delusions of "the perfect game"...

Playtest Notes (December 13th, 2008 – me, Miss K, Miss A)

 Seems like the roles having different orders in different phases is unnecessarily complex. We ended up with the player holding the Governor token going first in the character selection phase and from then on the player to Governor’s right going first in each subsequent phase.

have I designed a Euro or American style game?

hi all.

If you have read through the rules for Hai Lung, I would appreciate some thoughts on how 'euro' it is? It feels like each new iteration is less wargame and more streamlined, but I am a little removed from 'the industry' so cannot be sure of the definition of 'euro'. Thank you.

Hai Lung v3.5 - yep, I'm on a roll...

A confluence of personal circumstances means I am putting a lot of time and thought into this at the moment. Here's another little tweak, making this v3.5:

Hai Lung v3.5

Components
6 players' ship markers
12 Character tiles
8 PORT tiles
8 VOYAGE tiles
1 Temple Marker
1 Governor token
1 Emissary token
9 Ships' Ledgers
60 Opium chests
60 damage tokens
LOTS of 6-sided dice... say at least 50... (is that a problem?)

Game Board

Hai Lung v3.0 - 3.4

In the first post I covered in scant detail the history to date of my idea for a boardgame that captured some of what made Taipan on the Apple IIc so good.

The big difference between v3.x and the previous ones is the use of character roles to replace large chunks of game mechanics and to contribute to the drastically reduced number of components. Interestingly, I don't think the rules got any more complex with the addition of character roles.

Four-sided dice

I've been doing some research on buying dice for my boardgame and came across these really cool four-sided dice.

And they are super-inexpensive (.75) for a box of 50.

Hai Lung: starting a game blog 8 years after the initial game idea...

Do you remember the game Taipan for the Apple IIc? I loved that game - even in luminous green on black - and played it for hours as a kid. I had always wanted to make a board game version.

In the Beginning...

Collectible Card Games. Why did I have to think of a new design for collectible card games? So much time and balancing. In order to keep myself going and creative I figured that "reporting" to my blog would be a great way to start. So here I go.

The long traffic jam

Greetings one and all, on this damp and blowy night – sounds like inspiration for a game!

I’d like to write a few words of introduction – to see if I can’t involve myself a little in the broader world of board game design.

My name is Peter and I used to ride a motorbike – a B31; the name stuck.

Introducing myself

Erm, I have written a little piece in order to introduce myself, but I don’t know where to put it. After reading it you may have some suggestions, but where can I put in the mean time? It is a bit too long for a blog.

Sad…I mean B31 Pete
