Zzzzz modded guiki and it is now up at the following link:

http://bgdf.com/modules.php?name=Guiki

To be perfectly honest, it doesn't even look as good as WysiwygWiki did on the old site. Unfortunately I couldn't get WWiki to work on the new nuke software. I may try again briefly on Monday to see if it's worth pursuing wwiki over guiki.

Thanks!

Also let's give a warm welcome to Brykovian and Zzzz!

Hmmmm,

Darke can you fill me on reasons why you think WysiwygWiki looked better? Guiki is VERY simple wiki and the source would be easy to modify if we dont like the way something looks. So I can alter it if we want it to "look different".

And if you want, I can take a look at WWiki also and see if I can get anywhere with it.

Sorry, I didn't mean 'looks' in the literal sense. WWiki had more features to it. I.E. you had better control of the site as far as administration and such. I'll see if I can get it up on Monday and let you look at it, if not just to refresh my memory as to what I actually liked about it.

I played a little with the Sandbox page ... the editor seems to work fine with what I've tried so far.

However, does GUIKI allow for seeing and/or reverting back to previous versions of the page?

Nope, that is one of the limitation/issues. Basically I decided to "port/fix" Guiki so we would have a simple/basic wiki integrated into the current site. If nothing else, this can serve as a baseline and we can work from there.

Beyond something simple like Guiki, I think we might need to go back to an entire wiki site move. Personally, I dont feel that a move to wiki is needed. The current site already supports 95% of what members need, so what is it that we really want to add?

If I might, can we take a step back? Can the admins post about what they want to see in a wiki area and what they think members will want to see?

(If all else fails, I will go back to working on the phpnuke to wiki port of the forums/user data.)

The Wiki has always been Darke's baby, so I think his vision should rule the day. But it's my understanding that what is sought is a sort of game design "encyclopedia". We have over 10,000 forum posts on all manner of game design subjects, and while this is great, it's unwieldy. The wiki would be the distilled essence of the wisdom contained in our collective experiences and insights. It would also be more interconnected, in the sense that links in an entry about the "kingmaker problem" could lead you to entries about games known to have this problem, or to mechanics that are known to give rise to this problem, or to other problems that can go hand in hand with the kingmaker.

To me, the wiki format is simply a means to an end; the encyclopedia is the thing. But what we've always needed, and never really formulated, is, I think, a high-level structure into which the various entries will be placed. I also think that access to writing content should be restricted, again subject to the discretion of a pointman who has an overall idea of how the pieces fit together and who is competent to write content. In that sense, I think calling it a wiki is a mistake, because a wiki implies a level of openness that I think we absolutely do not want.

What I think we lack is this high level vision of what the wiki is supposed to be. The trick is that it will never happen if we try to formulate this vision collaboratively, but none of us have the time to work on it individually. Not sure how we'll resolve that; maybe a hand-shaking, not-too-rigid structure would be sufficient to get the ball rolling, and as content is added, someone can retroactively manage the wiki in conformity to a to-be-determined structure.

Just my thoughts.

Ok so I am editing my post, sorry for the confusion Darke,

Jeff while I understand that the wiki is Darke's baby, I am just trying to take a step back so I can become more informed about previous wiki conversaions you all might have had .

Any information that any admin has about the past wiki conversions will be helpful for me as I attempt to assist Darke with a wiki solution.

Right now I think I have a good understanding of what is needed, but I am just trying to double check.

Thanks for your input....

I understand and agree; my point was more to say, "Take what I say with a grain of salt, since Darke's opinion carries more weight than mine on this subject." Hope that clears it up.

Bad news. I have lost my copy of Wywiwyg Wiki (or also called Wysiwyg Tavvi) . I think I may have deleted it after it didn't work on the new version of nuke. This wiki is being used at www.whatisflash.com. It's very good looking and has a lot of features. I have requested a copy of the software from the person who runs the wiki, let's hope he comes through and sends it to me.
