Folks,

OK it appears we are running somewhat stable at the moment. With that being said, I'd like to hear any bugs you may have encountered. Also, if you would like to make any suggestions about changes to the site, you may reply to this thread and do so at this time (although realistically, there is a good chance that I won't have time to tackle many of your suggestions).

Fire away!

Unless something's changed, the IM thing treats " and () as html tags (and says they're not allowed.

Also why is the site so narrow now? It seems squished!

I like the new user list on the left, but I think the Membership, People Online, and Online Now sections on the right are superfluous. I liked it when there was the personal messages thing at the upper right, and then the latest posts under that.

I continue to dislike the animated gifs. I think that includes the blinking light on the user list.

I do like the chat room status right there so you can see who's in the chat room. I noted that before I turned off the popup blocking I tried to enter the chat... I guess I was in there but the window got blocked, and then I couldn't get out!

I think that's all for now.

The obvious: I'm a "four-sided die four sided die", and in the chatroom it's putting \ in front of apostrophes (some kind of escaping... like "it\'s" and so on).

It's also annoying that it pops up a window to let you know you've left the chatroom... the absence of the chatroom is pretty much all the evidence I needed!

The site messenger and the named list of people online are totally redundant... I'd toss the named list, since it would move up the recent post list, which is useful, not to mention the site messenger is the more useful of the two. I do like the info about new members and stuff one the right though! But it could be moved to the left under site messenger, again to slide up the recent posts (and get the recent journal entries somewhere near visible). Since the right side's so full of stuff anyway, no harm in stretching out the left to match.

The site looks good to me, thanks for all the hard work. I agree with seth and don't like animation on the page, but it's not a big deal. I found that the initial logon window no longer shows the 6-digit secret code you need, but takes you to another page once you enter, saying you were incorrect in your login. Things seem to be running faster, which is great. I'll let you know if I find anything else.

I know this isn't a serious issue, but many avatar graphics are not displaying (except the placeholders).

Hello

The site looks great.
There are only some small things:
- We have an unknown user that is always logged in.
- All old references and links (to threads) are obsolete
- The user upload does not exist
- News avatars are not shown (and I think that you should remove them).
- Number of people online is different in the forum and on the first page.
- Date settings in my account do only work in the forum (and not in the home page (the list over Latest posts)).
- The membership list (home page) show different results depending on when you log in (Yesterday: at home and there were 1906 users and one new member (marked as new for yesterday). When I come to work (one hour later, there was the same number of members, the same member, but he was new for "today").
- Member list: Yesterday, there were 1906 members. Today there are 1911 members, but there are only one new registered member yesterday and none today.

Would anyone be opposed to limiting the size of custome avatars? When they get wider than the text, the Author box gets wider with them, and the Message box gets squished even more than it already is. Maybe it's just me, but I find it *really* annoying to read long narrow posts. I find lots of things annoying, but this is one of the more prominant things. As it is the site is only using about 74 percent of the width of my screen...

[edit] Maybe it's not that the avatar is too wide, but that the standard Author box is just bigger than it needs to be... anyone opposed to reducing that?

Is the intention so that people with pdf's can access the site while they're on the bus or whatever?

- Seth

P.S. I surrounded the word really with asterisks... lets see if it comes out bold or if the asterisks show up.

One thing I found stranger even in the older version is the size for the signature varies depending on how you access your profile.

If you enter the Forum, and click Profile Top-Middle you only have 20 characters as a signature.

If you enter via Your Account (Midlle-Left) and Your Info(Top-Middle-left), You have 255 characters for your signature.

I just hope I'm not the only one dreaming this.

As for the IM error, I don't have the expertise to really fix that. I believe Hpox might need to flex his muscles to fix that as it's more his area of expertise. I agree about the animated GIFs and flashing IM indicator. I will try and remove those when I get time. I agree about the extraneous member information as well.

As for the squished site, chalk that up to the mandatory Karate theme. It was Zaiga's idea. =)

Hey, I'm not the one pushing the buttons here! ;)

I like the theme, but yeah, it could be a bit wider. Is there an easy way to fix it?

Bugs:
- News avatars don't show.
- "Dice" avatars don't show.
- IM message error when using () or "
- Chat apostrophe escaping problem

Layout thingies
- Site could be a bit wider
- News search at top of screen takes up a lot of space and could go as it appear to be broken anyway
- Membership info at the right of the screen could go, or at least move it to a less prominent place. This is not information that is really interesting for most people. Also People online and online now info could go, or move it to a less prominent place. The user list for Site messenger gives the same info, looks nicer and is more useful. This would move the Latest Post and Journals up, which are more interesting items.
- I would move the BGG QuickSearch feature down, and the Chat Room status and Site Messenger up, to focus on the info that is really more interesting
- Perhaps the Latest Post Search in the middle of the screen could be made a bit smaller and then moved to the right, above Latest Posts, which seems like a more logical place

All of this to focus more on the stuff that I think is most important: forums, chat, IM, PM and journals.

Here's what NOT to do... change it to autoprint and save.
I almost screwed myself doing that.

Now I'm trying AutoTheme. I like it better because it fills up the screen. Though I'm not a fan of the colors.

Look like I'm not the only one dumb enough to do this. Almost got stuck too.

Well mainly because I plan on integrating some features into the Karate theme. I don't want to have to go and update each theme manually. And also because some of the color schemes in the other themes (Most of them actually) were clashing with the IM add in.

I haven't seen anyone else mention this, I don't think.

In the Site Messenger, in the "Online User List" box, I can only see the first four or so screen names, and there's no scroll bar to see the rest of the list. I actaully liked the "Users online now list" that was on the right hand side of the screen up until today, as I could actually see all of the currently online users. Although, it could go someplace other than the upper right.

Angel,

You probably have a popup blocker installed. You need to disable it for the entire site.

There should be a scroll bar, unless there's only 4 users online. It's probably another Mac problem. I removed the one from the right because it was redundant with regards to the site messenger. I have no plans to restore it.

Hmm... I have a scroll bar and there's just me online right now.

I would agree that it's nice to see all the online users. Maybe this and the 'online now' could be combined, replace the fancy Online Now box with a list, but when you click on the name you get an IM box instead of their info?

And this is new, I guess things are in flux right now, but my Private Messages bit in the upper right is gone. It also always has the login stuff when I'm at the home page. I can log in, which brings me to 'my account', but if I then click Home it has the login stuff again. The site acts like I'm logged in though.

Oh, and I agree with the guy that suggested moving the bgg search bar down (Zaiga I think).

- Seth

Oh, and the theme thing switched back on me. Damn you Karate! Damn You!

P.S. I really like the IM save option.

Since yesterday (26-Jan): I get the "not logged in" start page, also when I'm logged in.

Like Johan I'm getting the "not logged in" version of the main page even though I am listed as being online, and I'm obviously logged in as I'm making this post.

One other thing, I went on an unsuccessful hunt for the "donate to appease the wife" link and couldn't find it. I figure that since I've been active here for about a year and I've benefitted personally from the existence of this community that it was time I ponied up. So, Darke, if you could make that prominent again, I promise I'll click it.

peace,
Tom

Explanation

Folks, First off let me explain how I make changes to the site. Basically this site is run on a pre written package called PHP Nuke, written in a language called PHP. I do not know PHP. Unlike the board game geek where Aldie wrote the whole thing from the ground up, I am just not competent enough to make every single modifcation you guys ask for. Basically any change I make to the site is done by downloading preexisting modifications for PHPNuke. So that means if a feature doesn't exist in a downloadable nuke mod, then it doesn't exist on BGDF. So if such and such a thing doesn't work just perfectly, we may have to just live with it. I can make minor modifcations to some things, but more times than not it just doesn't work and I end up breaking it. I hope this message goes a long way to explaining why some things 'stay the same' when it's obvious they would be better a different way.

Another bug. When you have two windows with BGDF, and you get an IM, you get it twice. Probably not much you can do about that one...

Well, you could avoid opening 2 BGDF windows ;)

J/K

As for the PHP, I am not familiar with it, but if you PM me info on how to look at the code I might be able to figure some of it out. I've done some stuff like this before, I might be able to help some.

Changes:

A couple of fixes:

Old links in the forums should now work (I.E. those links that pointed to other threads).
Also restored the my upload option.

Tomorrow I will again attempt to setup the login block so it will tell you how many private messages you have pending.

Would it be possible to include a site FAQ? I figured out a lot of the terms commonly used here on my own, but there are still some acronyms that puzzle me (What is "GDW"?). I don't feel like I should bother anyone personally or waste posting space in an otherwise on-topic thread asking what these terms mean, and an FAQ would help a lot with that. Thank you!

"GDW" = "Game Design Workshop", it's one of the forums. All of the posts that start with "Game #X" are games being put up for discussion in the Game Design Workshop.

As to a site FAQ, I agree that's something we need to put together. I think the most important information it could contain is how to use the Forum Search feature. You wouldn't believe how many posts we get about how to copyright a game. I think the basic idea is, before posting a question about game design, publishing, whatever, always try to do a forum search. (To do that, one goes to the "Discussion Forums" link and then clicks on "Search" -- very easy!) If you have a question about something about the site, feel free to IM one of the admins (Darkhorse, sedjtroll, FastLearner, or jwarrend), or just go ahead and post a message!

-Jeff
