Whats this i see about a competition last year? Is there one this year?

My games are literally just a board and playing pieces; no cards, dice, role playing,,,etc. not hobby games. Is there a competition for me?

While im here, who owns the rights to the ideas posted? for example A helps B to finish his game/solve a fundemental flaw & so forth...would B have anyclaim on As game?

What competition are you refering to? The BGDF itself held a "doomed civilization" themed competition two years back. As far as I know there are no plans to start a new competition.

Another competition is the annual about.com competition. The judging for this years competition is in progress, so you are too late for that. Perhaps you could enter next year. They are usually looking for abstract 2 player games that you can play with common househould items. For more information visit the http://boardgames.about.com site.

Perhaps the most high profile boardgame design competition is the annual Hippodice competition. Here, any boardgame design may enter. It usually starts in November with results following in March the next year. Visit http://www.hippodice.de for more information.

You might try entering the Hippodice competition. I don't know what your games are like, but the Hippodice people tend to favor designs that adhere to the principles of the German school of boardgame design. If you don't know what that means then entering competitions might be a bit early for you.

No one owns any rights to ideas. If you are afraid that your ideas might get stolen, then this community will not work for you. The basic principle of a forum like this is that you help people out, and they help you out in return. Ideas are shared freely, and, yes, you run the "risk" that "your" idea might end up in someone else's game, but the reverse is true too, you could use someone else's idea to make your game better.

Really, creating a game is so much more than one or two loose ideas. I can give you a dozen of ideas and concepts for games right here, right now, and I wouldn't mind sharing these with the world, because these idea are worth nothing. Turning these ideas into a finely tuned, well playtested, coherent game, with polished rules, now that's the challenge.

There are a number of competitions floating around. Lots of them have specific themes that they want people to use, or specific componants, or specific mechanics - it's these constraints that make the competitions interesting. There are probably competitions that you could enter things into, it's just a matter of waiting until a suitable one turns up.

My assumption has always been that making use of other peoples ideas on this site does not give them any rights to the resulting game.

In general, we post all game design competitions as news articles. Up at the top of this page where it says search, type in the word competition and then press enter. That should list all of the current and past competitions. Most of them are cyclic, so if they aren't open for entries now, go check their website for when the next contest will be run.

Ahh the "stolen ideas" fear. A tough hurdle to get over initially, but the fear fades as you contribute more, get into actual helpful exchanges with people here, those private messages start coming in, your games come faster and better, and you realize the true value of this site and its contributors/visitors.

You'll also start to realize how cheap ideas are. A dime a dozen around here, and there's tons of good ones. Fight the fear.

Maybe i did not make myself as clear as i intended about idea theft. It doesnt bother me, and it certainly aint something i worry about - it was just that i didnt want any comeback on me if someone shared there ideas with me....its happened before, but i think they've got the message!

My 'ideas' sure aint nothing spectacular; there aint nothing new under the sun! Oh dear, all theses double negatives, my english teacher would kill me! Anyway, like i said, i was just curious.

Anybody remember that 'camellion' pieces in a chess variant?

Ok, one last thing. Though i dont have anything original in games mechanics to offer i would like to ask if anyone can help me in how to lay a 'maze' board. I.e., shuffle cards & deal them into a grid pattern to generate a maze,,,wait a sec, i do have something alittle different to offer - well something less explored i should say, capture by restriction. But im rambling.

finally, what are the guidelines for naming games? I got one called Babylonia,,,theres another i see called that (completely different type of game) would i need to chance my name?

If your game is still in the prototype stage then don't worry about the name. If you are thinking about publishing the game then it's probably a good idea to come up with a unique name, not just because of any possible legal trouble, but also simply to avoid any confusion.

I didn't say there wouldn't be any legal trouble. If you are using a trademarked name in your title, such as, say, Monopoly, I'm actually pretty sure that would cause legal trouble. To avoid any trouble, use a unique name.
