Hey Darke, just a thought...

Why is it that we can't use our own avatars under our names? Now that we're about 1200+ strong, I'm seeing some duplicate avatars. If we could link to our own avatars (you wouldn't even need to make space to store the images), then I could finally take the bag off my head and use the same avatar I use for BoardGameGeek, and other message boards.

Continued, endless thanks for your hard work!

Great idea, but the software does not support this option automatically. Administrators can upload icons and then we can hard code them into the SQL using MyPHPadmin, but this service is just not something I want to offer everyone due to its tedious nature. There are a lot of things I'd like to implement (and I've thought of this before), but I just don't have the know how to do so. I wish I did.

So the bag stays on. :) No problem. Thanks anyway!

Nope!

would putting in your own logo on your posts cause a problem?

like this.

I have no problems with that whatsoever... But as you can see, it doesn't always work as a lot of hosts (especially free ones) don't allow 'hotlinking' of image files.

Darn It worked in the preview, i'll have to wait until i get a real site.

In more recent versions of phpbb this is an option you can just turn on ... not sure if that's true for the version running here. Darke, if you're bored ;-) You can check easily like so ...

-go to the phpbb admin screen
-click on "configuration" under "general management"
-scroll down and turn on "Enable avatar uploading"

this will also allow you to set the maximum size and dimensions for uploaded avatars. Although, it isn't truely uploading, the user's avatar has to be available on the web and phpbb will go fetch it and save a local copy. Speaking of which , you have to make sure that the appropriate directory is writable by the web server. You can view and change that directory on the configuration screen.

Users can then go edit their profiles and punch in a url from which phpbb will download the image.

peace,
Tom

Awright! My true fuzzy face is revealed!

OK, it isn't... I'm not nearly that snazzy a dresser.

Thanks Tom and Mike!

You have to click the profile link at the top of this page, then go all the way to the bottom to the avatar control panel. There you can upload a picture or link to an existing web picture.
