Are you interested in designing board or card games? That's as opposed to video games (a common misunderstanding of PC gaming enthusiasts that come here looking for advice).

Do you have a design rattling around your head that you're trying to get into a playable form? If so, start a journal and talk about it a little. Alternatively, look over the rules for the Game Design Workshop and submit your finished rules there.

Don't have finished rules yet? Still working on the design? Check out the game design forum for help and tips about some of the stumbling blocks of game design.

Need help rendering your design into a playable format? There's a whole section on Game Production that will help you get your game into a solid and playable prototype or into production.

All the answers you seek are here. If you're not sure where to start, try the search feature to get you going.

Wow!

Hi,

Ha, I never would've imagined such a response to my little plea for help! Thanks. OK, here goes: I like card games, I like dice games. Both are fun. But what I have fun designing is I think what you would call wargames. Or strategy games. I've never played a proffessionally done one, but I've researched a bit on the net, played some amerture ones that were free off the net, and got my own ideas. I like both sci-fi and fantasy. I think the one I have played that was a proffessional one, or would you say commercially done? Is Talisman by Games Workshop (I think) as well as Risk. I think that's it. I got a few different games in my mind at the moment. One is a space battle one where you buy and build your ships with the points you have (how many is decided before play), then you pit your fleet against other player's fleets. The first version is about finished. Also, I have an idea for a fantasy one. I came up with this idea just today, and it allows for you to play a very complex or simple game. The board I have now is a square pattern, but I think I'd preffer hexes eventually. On the board you place towns and dungeouns and the like. You create your characters (much like Might and Magic or Wizardry on the PC, but much simpler) up to 4 per player. Then you play the quest (that's the name of the game BTW: Quest). The quest could be anywhere from get the magic sword before the others, or kill all the other players, or be the first do to this or that. I'm real excited about this idea. It's much beter than my previous versions of Quest, which were basically Talisman rip-offs. Ha. But don't we all start off by copying? Anyway, the space one like I said is almost done, at least the first version, and Quest is going through a major overhaul to make it better. Thanks for all your advice, and I'll certainly look around the site a lot more. Any more help would be most appreciated.

Your welcome

If you like you and I can collaberate on some ideas about doing a ccg (customizable card game). I am working on to war card games based on ww2 and then vietnam. I have quite a bit of ideas and suggestions down on paper and I know how the game will look like. What I will do is make a journal and then if you are interested you can make comments so we both can understand how the mechanics will work in each of our games.

Ahhh Might & Magic. I wasted many a good hour on that series of games. Loved 'em, and just the thought makes me want to work on an old-school fantas adventure game of the type.

There are already 2 games listed on boardgamegeek called Quest

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/5851
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/1225

Both are fantasy adventure games, not exactly similar to what you describe, but close enough for rock n' roll, as they say. A good search through BGG has become a prerequisite for me when I come up with any game name or idea.

Hi,

First I'll respond to OutsideLime. M&M is great. Between my brother and my Mom, we have 1-7, and 9. I play 9 most. It's great fun. Anyway, I'll have to check bgg more often for that. A good idea. Thanks.

And now for Bulldog. At the very first, when I saw people talking about card games, ha, I thought they were speaking of like a plain deck of cards. Though now I know it's ccg. To tell the truth, I've not played much of those. But I'm interested in learning. Anyway, yeah, I'm interested. So, exactly what do we do? I'm still new here, so I'm not sure exactly what it is you're suggesting. But I am interested.

Find friends willing to play games and play some eurogames! Seriously, start by playing as many as you can. If you are curious at all, you will love playing fresh games. As a designer, it's a bliss learning all about those cool mechanics and way of handling decisions. I wish I could forget everything just to experience it all again.

Hi,

hpox, there are some problems with your suggestion. Don't get me wrong, it's a great one, one I had yet to think of, but one I sadly (at least for now) follow. A few reasons why. The only friends I have either are completely on the net, or I only see them at church on Sun. And on the net or phone during the week. We never go to eachother's houses, for various reasons. All the people in my immediete neighborhood are not people I'd associate with. Of course there's my family. But my little brother of 13 (compared to my just turning 18) is to easy to beat. My sisters (7 and 9) couldn't learn those types of games. And my parents are too busy with this that or the other. Then there's the money problem: I don't have a job. Never have had one in fact. However, I'm going into the Navy in a few months, so I'll get plenty of money there, and will quite possibly make friends interested in playing those games. I sincerly hope so cause I really want to play some of those games. They look like great fun. Cause I'm very interested. BTW, any recommendations of what I should start out with?

Hi Qundar !

Well, sometimes it's hard to find an opponent. My gaming friends has scattered everywhere. I have 2 gaming groups currently, one is from my university friends (sadly, 2 of them will move out of town this month, so the group will be only 4 or 5 persons left, including me and my wife). With this group, I played 15 games of St Petersburg in the last 5 days, and tonight we will play again this addictive game :)
The second goup is from ex-Magic player, only 5 players at most.

So that's how I have a gaming group, including to present my new design games (fotunately, my 2 complete game is for one player only, you can check my site, it has fantasy theme too).

Maybe you can go to hobby stores, maybe where CCG is played, make friends there. Usually CCG players (especially Magic players) likes board game too. Plus, you can lean how to play Magic there. Waning : if you've neve played Magic before, you will be addicted by it, in a good way :)
Or just discuss/playtest you game here in the net. I think BGDF is the right place, I myself has given a lot of help by people here in BGDF.

Hi,

My other problem: I don't have a car, or a liscence. Yes, I'm 18 and don't have one. Laugh, one and all. Ha. I never had a reason for one, since I had no job and everywhere I did go my parents did to so I always had a ride (plus, I've never had a girlfriend so I didn't need one for that either). Now, all of a sudden, I have every reason to get one. ARGH! So I'm getting one soon. And I live in the middle of nowhere, well, not completely, but it's hard to get to places like that. However, once I get in the Navy, I plan on looking for people to play games with, cause I really want to. I'd like to try a ccg or some of those eurogames, or just other games. I want to learn more about it all so I can make my games better. But at this moment, for the next 6 months I think, I really can't do any of it. Do you know how frustrating that is?
Anyway, I'm looking at your game right now, and while I can't print it up at the moment (sigh, parents, never letting you empty the ink cartridge, ha), it looks real cool. It's a great idea. I might have to sometime soon figure a way to get my Mom to let me print it up. I know the game I'm currently working on, will hopefully also be able to be one player. Or more if wanted. I'm trying to make it a flexible system. See how that works.
Well, off to other stuff around the forums. See what else is going on. I'm now looking at your first game. Looks neat.

Hey, I'm twice your age and don't have a car (or a license.) Mind you, I live in England, where this isn't considered some form of disability, so I suppose that's not hugely useful :-)

My advice is to try and get hold of a copy of "Ticket to Ride" or maybe "Settlers of Catan"* and play them with your siblings. If you do this, then there's a chance you might find that they become gamers, which is always good, and, as family, you are reasonably likely to see them again in the future regardless of what you do! And if they've played a few games, then they'll find it easier to understand one of yours...

(*frankly, if I wasn't on the other side of the Atlantic, I'd offer to send you a copy of Settlers myself :-)

Hi,

Yeah, over here it is a disability :) Well, unless you live in a big city like LA or NY where you can use public transportation. But I live in what we call a geographical oddity: 30 minutes (by car) from everywhere! Ha.
Wow, if you'd actually be willing to send me a copy of that game (well, that is if we weren't so far apart), then it must be a fantastic game. I know I've heard quite a bit about it around the forums. What's the game about?
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to think about this. See, I'm leaving in like a month or two. And while getting that game and playing it with them would be great, I have limited funds (about $50 right now, and some of it's for other stuff), and by the time it got here, it'd not be much time until I left. I'll have to wait, I think. Though not long, I'm not gonna let myself wait that long.

P.S. I'm at your site right now (you had a link to it on another thread), and it's pretty neat.
