Its Free Games Day!

Just a quick heads-up...
www.gametableonline.com
is hosting a free game day today. They are a multi-player online site that hosts games of:
Igel Argern (sp?)
Nuclear War
Lord of the Fries
Drakon
Cosmic Wimpout
...and a couple of others I haven't played yet. The multi-user interface works really well... and its a lot of fun.

...and for today at least, gaming is 100% free!

I know about it because they are working on an online multi-user version of Lemmings In Space!, although its in development, so you can't play that one as yet.

Hope to see some of you there today.

I signed up for them on their last free games day. I found that I couldn't run any of the games without installing a scripting extention that let the page automatically run arbitrary code whenever I visit a page with the code.

That seems like a huge security problem; it should prompt the user.

I also keep getting spam from them. I've tried unsubscribing but I still get about 1 spam/month.

you might want to go back and check your profile so that you are not getting the monthly news letter.

IT IS normally a pay site, so recieving their monthly newsletter should probably not be a shock.

...and, as mentioned, you can change this in your profile.

I saw Darke and Dral there... did you get guys get to play?

The site works off Java almost exclusively... hence the need to download, automatically, the games.

I haven't had any security issues with them in the last 16 months that I have been playing there. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I did win the Nuclear War tournament held yesterday... hoody-hoo!

I don't object to Java. I've been playing on BSW (which is all Java) quite a bit lately and I do some coding in Java, so I have an up to date JVM installed. What I object to is having to install the program to automatically run code.

I'm also not accusing GTO of having any security issues directly. Just that having my browser automatically run code is a major security hole if I go to other sites that have malicious code as a trojan.

There is no reason it has to be done that way. It could prompt for permission to run like Java normally does, or it could be written as a standalone application.

Yes I played one game of nuclear war. Very dull. I love nuclear war,but it seems the online environment doesn't lend itself well to table talk and taunting and such. Either that or the person I was playing with was extremely dull.

I can't code my way out of a paper bag, so chalk this up to ignorance on my part. I will mention it to Joe Minton, the high-grand-puba of the GTO site... couldn't hurt.

I didn't play any NW but hung around and played some other games until the server spikes kept knocking me off the site.

NW strength as a game comes from it's dark humor, it would help the fun factor if chat was more a part of it so we could make Skippy jokes.
