My journal entry screen has all of its buttons as red Xs instead of what ever button it should be. Is this normal? It’s the same red X you see when a web site is trying to show a picture that isn’t there.
It also says something like "Did you check for typos?" and there is no preview button like when posting on the forum.

I have that too, but it could very well come from my crapy machine + my inability to maintain it...
Just hold your mouse over the red X's and wait a second. A pop-up meta-tag (or whatever they are called...) will apear, telling you if it is bold, image, or something else...
Also, if you use HTML, the tags will apear in the journal-entry (at least on my machine), but if you click EDIT, they will have dissapeared. If you then click submit, the tags will be gone from your journal entry, and display whatever they are supposed to display.
Behold my crappy machine, its very bad temper and the patience to make it all work more or less in the end...
