Game Design Tool seeks tester

Hi,

During this year I've worked on a on line game design tool. When I started it, I was not aware of this group and the thoughts here. The goal of this tool is to allow even non-computer-savvy game designers to design games online, and let others test and play them.

It has been an ambitous undertaking but it now nears completion, in its first usable version. Since I am a software developer first, game player second and designer last. I would be very happy if any game designer would like to help make this into an excellent tool rather than just ok.

Anyone interested?

Cheers,

Tomas.

Tomas,

I'd love to see what you have so far so I could offer suggestions and such. Care to upload it here or forward me a URL of where to get the software?

I would like to give it a shot too. I'm continuing the designs of my games and they need a bit of playtest.

Please send URL or contact information.

That's great.

I can't begin to tell you how happy I am to have found you guys. Programming never worries me. After all these years I feel I can code my way through any software problem I happen to encounter, but what use is that if you build a program no one wants to use.

Give me a day to write up some bare bone documentation, or at least a draft on what's what, in order to facilitate your first encounter with the editor. After that I will post the URL to the site here.

Tomas,

I look forward to looking it over. It may be an answer to one of our needs here. Keep us posted!

Very interesting, I'd like to take a look and give you some feedback too if you wish.

A question; "non-computer-savvy game designers to design games online" is pretty broad, are you talking about boardgames or just games in general?

The project covers only board games. The design and play of board games is hard enough to accomplish, and I will be very happy if we manage this much.

Board games by our definition is any game you can play on a table, i.e. whatever you find at boardgamegeek.

I have PM'ed you all information on how to get access to the editor. I hope you find it interesting and I look forward to your thoughts.

Tom,

Not to seem too desperate, but I didn't get a private message from you about this project ;). Please fill me in when you get a chance.

Strange, I thought I sent you an invite. It's possible I bungled that somehow.

But no to worry. I sent another PM to you. Hopefully I got it right this time.

Can the editor be run on a Mac? How about a Mac running OS 8.5?

I'm interested in taking a look, but it may have to wait until I get a PC someday!

I thought you were going to post the link here, or I would have responded earlier. I'm very curious to take a look at this as well, if it's not too late to get in on the beta. ^_^

Jeff,

It's in Java, so it should work. Just make sure you download the Sun Java run time and you should be good!

I'm interested in testing this out, as well...please? ;)

Thanks!

I would love to let you test the tool. And you will get the chance to see what it is and is not. Unfortunately the site has been unstable for the last couple of days, I was made aware of this just recently and I feel I have to fix it before we let more people in.

We take steps to remedy the situation and we hope to have it fixed tomorrow. Once we have stable reliable service again, you and others will be invited, I promise.

I run an OS X Mac too, and I'm a Java programmer myself. I'd like to see your tool, if you're willing to send me a link. Thanks!

What the tool currently does:
Lets you generate a hex grid map of "any" size which appearance you can alter, but you can not import any graphics yet.

Let’s you create counters which appearance you can alter, but you can not import any graphics yet.

You can create "online" rule references in form of charts and Value Lists.

You can not save nor test what you have done.

Hope I didn't leave out anything skydiverx?

Thank you for that Mawibse, and for helping me setting the expectations right of the members here. The tool does a few things more than that, and grows through daily builds, but the main points is no graphics can be imported today and design can not be saved.

The time is not that far off, when the above functions are made available to users, importing graphics and saving, but until then the testing that can be done is trying it out and get some impression on what it's like to work with.

This is in my opinion the ideal time to get input on usablity and fundamental functions on the tool. The infrastructure and datamodel is in place, most of it, but it is the user interface that will make or break this tool. All kinds of assistance will be of immense value throughout the lifecycle of this tool, and as it grows I see different people contribute as they will.

Since the stability issues seem to be resolved now you will get to see for yourself later tonight what's what, as I will start to let more people in.

Cheers,

Tom.

Where on the site does one actually get to the tool? All I can see are the forums.

Jeff,

Make sure you join the site first. After you join the site, go to the editor and then click the picture preview of the editor; this will start the download of the Java Application.

skydiverx do you have a time schedule for when your not only "designing" the game but can also test "play" it?

Will you make it run from my HD (DL and run the JAVA app) in the future to avoid save game security issues when running from the browser?

Regarding a time schedule: When we started this we set as our goal to have the game play client ready sometime during november.

Short list of milestones would look like this:

The overall goal is to allow developers and players to meet online.

1) First working editor (bare minimum of functions)
- Edit/create components
- Save/load components and gameboxes to site repository
- Publish game for test/play

2) First working player (No rule systems involved)
- Start game session /invite accept
- Save/load ongoing game to site repository

3) Next major editor release
- Refined publish/share/ etc system
- All the things people really needed in the first place.
- First stab at the rule system definitions

4) Next major player
- First rule system components involved/available for use

5) and so forth

No save game security issues will arise since we store everything on line.
