Anyone aware of research studies on playing board games?

Is anyone aware of any research studies done which look at the effect of board games or strategy games on the mind? Perhaps some retrospective study that compares people of similar background except Group A played a lot of board games in their youth & Group B played none? Is board game design an academic discipline anywhere e.g. Germany? Just curious.

This would be interesting. The only acedemic journal I've found on games is this:

I don't know how much academic work has been done, but there is a lot of popular press covering school programs like the chess club at Harlem's Mott Elementary and the link to better grades, self-confidence, critical thinking skills, "life skills", &c.

I live in the SF Bay Area and there has been an influx of Russians the last 10 years. They arrive with a no-brainer assumption that children should learn chess at all school levels; not to become grand masters, but for the mental benefits.

There are some studies that propound the scholastic benefits of sports programs, there may be some overlap in that literature.

Splunge,

I found this by googling “board games” with “Alzheimer's” and/or “dementia”. (There were a zillion other hits as well.)
