Found this comic strip online today about playtesting, enjoy!
Full Frontal Nerdity - Design Challenge!
Saw that, it was great!
After this week that link won't work right (it takes you to the current one), so after this week you can use http://archive.gamespy.com/comics/nodwick/ffn/ffn096.htm
There's another good boardgame-related one here: http://archive.gamespy.com/comics/nodwick/ffn/ffn088.htm
:D
Actually, everything up until the 'draw from the bag of unspeakable horrors' doesn't sound too bad. That should be the next Game Design Showdown... to take that little description (the first two panels of the 3/23 strip) and turn it into a game. Put a theme to it, etc. The final product would have to fit the description in the comic.

I'd be down for that! Of course, you've effectively started the contest right this second by saying that... who can avoid thinking of ideas?

Let's make it unofficial then, and keep it in this thread. No deadlines or judging.

You didn’t like the bag of assorted collectable minis???
You didn’t like the bag of assorted collectable minis???
Not really. Besides, I thought the rules that we could come up with could be better kept under control (i.e. short) if we didn't use all the fiddley stuff.
BUt then again, maybe that would be cool, needing rules for flying and underground units. I just think it would be too much work to be 'fun'.

So here's the criteria, spelled out (so you don't have to reference this comic):
Make up a set of rules for a game that would meet the following description completely. It goes without saying that we'll try to make our games not suck.
First we arrange the tiles representing the starting lands like so, and everyone places a marker where they want. As we explore, more territories are drawn from the tile bank. Tiles produce resources which can be used to buy armies, settlements, or other perks.

Uh… either my joke fell flat or yours is going over my head. (Probably the latter.)
For the record: I really don’t care too much for miniatures in general… and I especially don’t like the idea of Collectable Components.
But anyway, do we post our rules directly on this thread?

Yes, lets.
Very funny (except to anyone planning a game using a plexigals board for sky troops and under-the-table board for tunnels).
As for the second link, I never thought I'd see a reference to Settlers in a comic strip! Very cool!
