G Mail Invites

Apologies for my lack of participation-- I have been off-the-internet for much of it.

I do have some G-Mail invites, however. Anyone who wants one should drop me a PM.

Thanks,

Richard.

I have some, as well. The first 6 people to email me [ kevin.copeland(at)gmail(dot)com ] will get my invitations.

Please let the folks who don't have an account yet have a chance before getting a second one, though. ;)

I think they're pretty much everywhere now. I have 5 right now, but every time I get to 4 or less I'm instantly refilled to 6, so I suspect that I have an unlimited number of invites. Over the last few months I've given out about 30 or so, all but one of which was accepted, so maybe I'm the invite guy now or something, but whatever the case, feel free to ask me for an invite, too.

Yeesh!

I'm just waiting so that I can ask fourteen different people at once for an invite... ;-)

Hmmm

One of you guys was supposed to send me a g-mail invite. Would anyone care to follow through so I can see what the fuss is about?

Anyone still have a spare gmail invite? I've been dying to try gmail forever, and can't find a good invite link. Thanks in advance...

OK, I give up.

What are G-mails? Are they a hoax? Does it stand for Gag-mail? What is it?!! And why wasn’t I invited?! Tell me, tell me! I can’t stand it anymore!! Arghh!

I'm with you on this one. Please someone who knows, read this thread and give us the gmail wisdom we lack.

Thanks

It's Google's email service like hotmail or yahoo. They give you 1 gig of space for your email, and apparently they have a very good spam filter.

Their gimmick is that they're claiming its being beta tested (this has been going on for at least a year), and they started by inviting their employees and giving them invitations to invite others. Then each account periodically gets invitations to pass onto others.

When it first started, invites were selling on ebay for $50-100 (mainly people were willing to pay that much for an early crack at a username@gmail.com.

After a year of geometric growth, it's very easy to get invitations now. The whole thing is a social networking project on google's part. They are building a web of who is connected to who. It's also supported by advertising, so their software scans your email to post ads related to it. They also build a profile about your interests and sell it to marketers.

The ToS is quite scary. They keep every email you receive (the 1 gig limit doesn't apply, that's just a limit on what you can see), even if you've "deleted" it. They own all your email and datamine it as much as possible.

I signed up with them before I learned all this, so I've never used the account, but I do have 6 invites if anyone is still interested.

Thanks Oracle

I really didn't understand all the underlying meaning to what you said, but your tone scared me enough. I think I'll pass on the invite. Why would I need a gig for my email anyway!

Thanks anyway

For me needs, however, the ToS doesn't bother me at all. I used the account for a variety of mailing lists (it does an awesome job of threading messages) and for a wide variety of other non-personal things. And I love it!

And mind you, I'm a bit of a tinfoil hat guy: I maintain multiple anonymous grocery store cards for each store, to give you an example. Yet I'm completely unconcerned about my Gmail account. :)

I notice you say you don't use it for personal stuff. If it suits your needs for mailing lists, etc that's good.

Local HD space is cheap. I prefer to use pop3 and download all my email. I assign a different email address on one my domains to each mailing list/web site and then all the email is automatically sorted into a folder depending on its source, where the source is recognized by the "to" field.

BTW, if you ever pay by plastic at the grocery store, you lose the anonymity of on the loyalty cards, no matter how many you have. There are internet projects like this one: http://www.cockeyed.com/pranks/safeway/ultimate_shopper.html to use the same code for hundreds of people across the country to really screw up their system.

I really don't see how you can say you're a tinfoil hat guy and you're completely unconcerned about your Gmail account -- unless you are confident you don't use it for anything personal, and it can't be linked back to you.

You can also be linked if you pay by check.

Note that I said I'm a bit of a tinfoil hat guy. I have no problem with my name being linked iwth reading several boardgame mailing lists or lists related to my profession.

So, out of all of these magically refreshing invite lists... might there still be an invite left a chap could have?

You bet. PM me with your name.
