Here's the news from Greg at The Games Journal, not sure if everyone's seen this yet. I'm sad to see it go, but glad the archives will be kept up; they're one of the best sources of information for budding game designers.

It is with much regret that I announce that The Games Journal has ceased publication. It was not an easy decision to make but it was the only one that made sense. The evolving nature of the web and the declining number of contributions has threatened to render our magazine irrelevant and that's not something that I'm willing to accept.

Despite the disappointment at having to shut things down, I am still very proud of the content we've been able to provide. There are several hundred articles, reviews, puzzles, variants and rules in our archives for people to visit. Frank Branham and I will do everything in our power to ensure that these remain available on the web for everyone to enjoy.

It has been a very interesting five years running the site; it was a lot of work but it was also very satisfying. I would first like to thank all of our contributors -- they are the ones who are most responsible for making The Games Journal what it was. I'd also like to thank the manufacturers who sent review copies of their games, it was very much appreciated. Of course, I cannot forget Frank Branham who, as publisher, paid all the hosting bills for the site. Thanks Frank! Finally, I'd like to thank you for visiting -- I hope that you enjoyed The Games Journal as much as I did.

I am very sad to see it go. I didn't even know it existed until about a month ago and since then I've been pouring over the archives. It is such a valuable source of game design insight and I hope that the articles and reviews can stay up on the web for a long time.

I found the games journal about a year ago, and still find new and insightful wisdom about games, gamers, and the industry in general. The site will be sorely missed. If there was a gaming flag it would be flown at half-mast.
