At last I decided to buy a site from GoDaddy.
Then I searched a way to build the site (www.jackgames.net) , but can't find it inside GoDaddy.

How can I build a basic site with GoDaddy ? (I'm, looking something like Geocities, there's index.html and folders and so on. The user interface is very different here).

Please help.

Thanks.
Jack

Sorry, I can't help you with GoDaddy - I don't know anything about creating websites.

I went ahead and moved this post into the "Off Topic" forum. We're trying to organize the site and keep it organized so people can find things later... since this post wasn't about game design at all it really belongs here (off topic).

Sorry sedjtroll, I thought that web-publish is one of Publication Topic.

Here's the follow up after looking around GoDaddy (and asking my friend who know these things, but not GoDaddy):

after paying around $9 a year for the site name (only?), then I have to buy a WebSite Tonight in GoDaddy (they have Basic/Economy/Deluxe/Premium). I should buy one of those (Economy is around $36 a year, I think Economic is enough but it has only 5 pages limit ??) then I can build my site.
(then I need around $45 a year just for a free-games site... rrrrrrrr)
is this correct ?

Question about bandwith : in Economic they say 1GB. Is it a month ? What if exceed the limit ? 'Lock' the site like Geocities ? If yes, locked until the end of month ?

Thanks for your help guys. I really need it.
:)

Go take a look at website hosting providers like www.phpwebhosting.com, www.routhost.com, www.bluehost.com and others providers similar to the ones I mention above (believe me there are TOO MANY providers these days and narrowing choices down to one can be a pain).

You would be better off getting a provider like like one of the ones I mention about and investing the time to understand how to use a provider like this to get the most from your money.

Basically you will use a provider like I mention above, along with your GoDaddy website url, to create a connection between the website provider server and your url/website address.

Over time going this route will be the best for your wallet. If you have any other questions, private message me and I will try to help you out.

Like Zzzz said, you buy your domain name from GoDaddy or whichever service. Then you have to buy a hosting service to actually serve up pages for you. GoDaddy is just giving you the domain name.

For your needs (and most everybody on here), hosting probably runs about $10 a month, though you might be able to find something suitable for 6 or 7 a month. Unfortunately, that's about the bottom layer; there aren't many services that are better than geocities but strip out DBs, shell access, etc to trim the price if you don't need those things (because they don't really cost the provider anything, so from their perspective there's no point).

The truth be told, Go Daddy doesn't do JUST domains. They provide all sorts of web services; hosting, e-mail accounts, website builders, etc. It may be easier for him to just get everything from one source.

As for a 1 GB transfer limit, this is huge. For example, if you have a game available for download that's 100 kilobytes zipped (which is pretty big), then it could be downloaded approximately 10,000 times before you reach your 1 Gigabyte limit. I hope that puts a little perspective on it.

As far as going over the limit, each provider will have their own method for dealing with it. Some will charge you an extra fee based on how much you go over, some will lock your account until next month, some may even request that you upgrade your plan.

If you're just going to be doing a simple web pages (i.e. just HTML), see if you can find a copy of Frontpage Express somewhere on the web. It's incredibly easy to use. Also grab a copy of SmartFTP, a great FTP program.
You'll need it to upload the necessary files to your website.

Thanks for the replays...

I need to study a lot of things about this before make any move...
(sooo much things to study....)

About 1GB bandwith limit, the two games I have now has files about 2MB for each game (zip). If 2MB is the average, the 1Gb will be reached with 500 downloads, or about 17 downloads a day, which is already reached in the last few days.
With more games in the site (the third one will come soon), the 1GB will be not enough (I think)
Or I have to find a way to make the files smaller (how ? I think using JPG maybe ? Mike made the PDF version of IOD2 files and end up with a 2,2MB file. The original BMP files are around 2MB too in total.

I will study about Frontpage Express and SmartFTP.

Thanks a lot guys. You're the best...

Zzzzz recommended phpwebhosting. Well that's what I use and for 9.98 a month, I'm satisfied. They offer unmetered bandwidth, which means that as long as you don't abuse it, it's unlimited. With a 2mb file being heavily downloaded, they might not like that though. But as long as you're not just serving pictures and movies, they're cool with it.

I'm pretty sure that you include a card backside image for each of your cards. This is not necessary. Including only one card backside image for each type of card will save some space.

And while I'm here, I'll mention http://illhostit.com/. Their cheapest plan is 400MB storage and 3GB bandwidth for $0.99 (a month?). I ran across this site because of a Firefox extension they built specifically to deal with the service (I don't know/remember what it does). This is assuredly over Jack's head at this point, but thought I'd throw it out for anyone interested.

I've used icdsoft.com for about 4 years and they've been fantastic. The few times I've needed it, support usually takes under 30 minutes. They charge $5/month for 7 gig of transfer or $10 for 21 gig.

I do a fair bit of web prototyping so I also have another account that lets me host multiple small websites each on their own domains. For short term when you're setting up your site, I can host your domain and give you around 50 meg of storage and 200 meg of transfer.

I'm also not using my whole 7 gig with ICD soft, so I can store your download files there and give you a couple of gig worth of downloads while I'm hosting the rest of your site. If you're using a couple of gig though, I'd like a link back to my own site from yours though :).

Hopefully this can help you get a good handle on what you really need and give you a chance to do some research while not having to rush into anything to get your site going.
