Partner who Quits?

Anyone have this happen to you...my friend and I started to work on this board game idea and I've put in so much time and research not only on just board game design and materials, but on the subject (which is Final Fantasy), just hours of research, and now I find out that she meant it all as a joke...I'm really bummed, I was looking forward to working together on it, even if it was just to play among friends...

Not quite the same...

But I sometimes start working on games with friends who aren't really designers and don't have the passion for it at all. After a session or two of enthusiasm, subsequent sessions are composed entirely of me presenting the ideas/mechanics I've thought up/worked out, and the other guy sort of agreeing or trying to make alterations that just don't fit with the frame I've spent hours hammering into shape, without having devoted a single thought to the project in the meantime.

That's what happens when you turn to non-designers as design partners, I guess. And that's why I came here, to the BGDF. To find other creative souls who will actually have something to say, instead of just being a wall for me to bounce my voice off of.

Don't be discouraged, some people, MOST people, just don't have the patience or vision for this type of work.

Well, it was her idea in the first place lol. I'm not really a designer, this would be my first real board game ever anyway. Well, that's a lie, my Sister and I made a Chess Board out of a poster board and used Cowboy's and Indian's to be the pieces lol...but I'm not experienced at all in board games and what not. It just seemed like a fun idea.
I guess I'm just going to take the idea, probably change it so it isn't Final Fantasy anymore, and do it by myself. I don't intend to sell it, just want to have it to play with friends and what not. It's still discouraging when your friends quit on practically anything you try to get involved in lol. The only thing my best friend and I do consistantly is play StarCraft lol.

You can always convince your friends to play board games once a week or every 2 weeks. If you currently have many board games, play these games during the designed day and when your game is completed, you can introduce your game as a new game. You can then get the comments you want about your game.

If it is your first game, I suggest you make something small and simple. Generally people and myself always start with something big and become bored in the middle of the design. Remember that game design is supposed to be a fun hobby not a boring work. So if at some point you don't enjoy designing the game anymore, let it rest for a few week and get back to it later. In your case, playing final fantasy could stimulate you to get back to your game design.

I have no problem being stimulated to do this, just wish my friend had told me in the beginning it was just a random idea that she wasn't serious about lol. But the project is still going to go on, even if I never finish it I'll just put little tidbits here and there.

I have had experinences like this too.

A group of friends an I are developing a Computer game. I was tasked to design the game and was told that they wanted to base it on a pre-existing game but I had free reign in other respects.

After several weeks of design I turn up to show off my design. It was not complicated but after the demo of my idea they turn arond ad said that they were goining to use an existing game as the design (this was the game that I had based my design on) and have rejected most of my design.

My advice to you is if you want to make a final fantsy game for your friends to play then do it. You might have to reign in some of the ideas you have had but you should not let it stop you from makeing the game you want, also don't let it sour you to working with other either.

Good luck with it.
