Has anyone here ever played the title game? It seems it would make a great boardgame (And Unification Wars seemed like the one, but I couldn't acccess the rules .doc, just guess from the comments.) and it might be fun to work it up with some help from people with more gaming experience than myself.

Hey!

You should check out the info on the game 'Freedom in the Galaxy'.

I think Start Wars Rebellion is a very similar (if I am thinking of the same game...) computerised version.

I have FITG, and have read a lot about it, and gone through all the rules, and the intro basic game, but have not yet played it, but when I find someone to stick it out with me I will. But it is one of the Monster Avalon Hill games, and thus is not easy to play. Also, from what I have read of it, it can be unbalanced and has several game play issues. But still, I would love to give it a go.

But yeah, I would be keen to see a smoother updated version of this game, and would be willing to invest some time/energy in working on one. If you are keen, go check out the stuff about FITG first, and then get back to me (PM me) with your thoughts, as this game has it all, but is just too much of a monster.

One of the trickiest thing would be how to keep things hidden (which is along the same lines as another game thread here in the forum...) i.e. where all the rebel bases and units are. Computer games can do this easily, not so simple in a board game...

I've played FitG several times (BTW, it was originally published by the long-defunct SPI) and loved it, though it does take a very long time to finish a campaign game, which is the only version worth playing.

Some reviewers have complained about issues of balance or too much luck. Certainly luck does play a significant role, especially for the Rebel player, which can be very frustrating if you get a run of bad luck. But I suspect that the people who complain it's biased toward the Imperials may not have figured out a good strategy for playing the Rebels -- as the designer's notes say, you can't just go around conducting random Diplomacy missions. It would be interesting to try to come up with a "condensed" version which could be played in a few hours, without sacrificing the epic scope and feeling of the game.

Yeah I have read arguements in favour of the Rebels, and others in favour of the Imperials. I kinda want to find someone I can learn the game alongside with, and who is willing to persevere with me.

Ah yeah, SPI, thats right, I tend to think of most of the older monster games as AH ;)

Most of the articlse etc I have read have been by hardcore gamers going into detailed strategies etc, which isn't much help for people just wanting to get in there and play.

Hell Yeah! I know there are a few variant of FitG around, but the ones I found were either unfinished, or needed you to print out and make a whole set of new components etc. But still, I totally agree - a shorter game that keeps the scope of the game would be just perfect...

Sounds exactly like Rebellion.

Not that I can access the rules... Seems to be my lot on this site. Anything that could provide good source material is out of reach.

I really have no way to produce game parts... But I can sure brainstorm. When it rains it pours, as they say.

I take that back; I may be able to produce some parts, but it will probably be tedious. I could take a big sheet of poster board and put labels on where the planets should be, label them accordingly, and use carpenters pencil or metal marker to mark hyperspace lanes... But it will definitely be ugly.

My main objective in this is to produce a large scale strategic game that plays faster than Risk, with less luck. (Our games take forever.... Hours at a time.) Not to mention the fact that I thought Rebellion was in incredibly cool game, and since it's impossible to play in multiplayer, a boardgame (with support for more than two players) would be a very nice replacement.

The concept and theme of rebellion is cool but the game sucks.

The technical aspect of the game is bad. It looks like it has been coded in visual basic.

The game is somewhat real time, while it should be better has a turn based game.

Somebody told me that the game was too easy. And the empire does not start strong enough. It start with around 3 ship and few system, I am ashamed to call this an "empire".

Rebellion simply rocks and it's still one of my favorite games.
It's a lot more person controlled than the "sit-and-watch" PC games of today.

My brother and I have developed a game that mirrors many of the actions in Rebellion, but expands even further. It's a long game, played out on a 6'x4' board with 2" hexes, but man is it fun!

Because of the length of the game, I'm thinking it may not be sellable. People have absurdly short attention spans anymore, and the few that would be able to enjoy it wouldn't make selling it feasable.

I could be wrong.

Sid Meier's Civilization is the most epic of epic computer game series. And it continues to sell well. Rebellion was just a poorly implemented game.

I don't know if I have the skills or patience to make a board that size....

But if you could send me the rules, I might be able to adapt them to something more within my reach.
