Anyone know how to make a bigger image out of a smaller image? I'd like to use this for the prototype box art and/or Rulebook cover for All For One:
http://www.dakotacom.net/~sej/A41/A41cover.jpg

Only problem is it's like not big enough.

I 'borrowed' the image from a d20 supplement... http://www.avalanchepress.com/gameAllForOne.php

Anyone have any ideas where I can find the full size cover for this book?

- Seth

Edit: I see it's available at Amazon.com, and they even have a slightly larger pic of it I think. Not big enough though.

There's a hidden technique in Photoshop to resize images.

Resample you image only 10% bigger at the time. Photoshop will do a much better work. You can do this until you have the desired size.

If you want tell me how big you want it and I can blow it up for you.

Enlarging Images

Heres a link to a decent overview of Photoshop Plugins that may help.

The short answer is that even with decent software anything over 50% enlargement is going to look dodgy.

Hope this helps.

You are, basically, screwed, as there's no way to invent data that isn't already there. That said, there are some things you can do that will help.

You can start by trying to eliminate some of the JPEG artifacting before enlarging it. Filters like "Reduce Noise" can help with this, though it's more effective if you select the noisier parts first.

There's also a JPEG noise reduction filter that ships with CS 2 but I haven't had much luck with it.

After enlarging it you can filter it further to smooth things out and, since the image is painterly to start with, add some artistic effects to make the lack of detail look like a good thing. This is mostly a matter of messing around with the Artistic filters.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try that and see how large I can make it before it looks real bad. I have a feeling it's just way too small to begin with.

I looked a bit on the net for a larger pic of that book cover to begin with, but no luck sop far. I might go ahead and buy the book (looks pretty cool anyway, though I don't play much d20) and take it to Kinko's and have them make a color scan.

It would be sweet if I could find the full size image on the net though.

Yeah, well if you do, I shall kill you.

(Hey, it's no fun if we can't argue in public. What details have you got about the artist/copyright holder, btw?)

Well that's a bummer...

None yet, but if I can find the book I can look into it. It might be the case that they would sell us that art (if we were interested), which would be cool IF we were self publishing - I think that pic would make a pretty darn good cover for All For One, don't you? Or maybe commission the artist to do something very similar, increasing the size of the fighting dudes, maybe a similar vinette with people meeting in secret as well - and with fancier lettering (more appropriate to the game, obv)

But my main point is that for a prototype cover it doesn't really matter. Unless we're producing or selling the image we're allowed to put it on the cover of a box in which we keep some game bits.

Adobe Illustrator has a feature called "LiveTrace/LivePaint" which converts bitmap images into vector art, which you can then scale to whatever size you want. Of course, you won't get any more detail than was in the original, but at least you don't get the jaggies that you see when you blow up a bitmap.

I experimented a bit with your image in Illustrator. Unfortunately you lose even more detail in the path-fitting process unless you take it down to the single-pixel level, in which case you may as well just blow up the bitmap. You can get some interesting impressionistic effects, but I don't suppose that's what you want.

Whoa... cool. Thanks for trying. You're right, I probably don't want impressionistic.

I'm sorta looking for a copy of the actual, physical book (I suppose ordering from Amazon would be easiest), maybe I'll go that route.
