How many prototypes do you have to make?

I get the impression that submitted prototypes are returned to the inventor if they are rejected. However, I have not seen that spelled out specifically anywhere. Do I need to make a new prototype for each submission or will publishers return my working models to me?

Thanks,
Carl

Your impression is false. Under no circumstances does a submission get returned to a submitter. You may get notified that your submission was rejected, but it will never be returned to you.

I have tried to stress this in the past, but I will say it again. For the most part, games are to be submitted electronically. Physical prototypes are the exception to the rule. If you have not contacted Ed Evans about submitting a physical prototype, then don

I think you misconstrue. ;-)

I was posting this in "Ask the Experts" and the question has nothing to do with the contest. I am specifically asking about submitting prototypes to game publishers (like Alea, Kosmos et al).

Thanks again.

Hehe. ;-)

You can simply ask the publisher to return your prototype after a certain review period. Most publishers need a few months, but if it takes them more than 6 months ask them to return your prototype so that you could send it to another publisher. Either this triggers them to give your prototype (another) look or you will get it back.

If a publisher has such a policy (of no returns), is it unreasonable to expect that I can ascertain as much before I send a prototype?

Aye, you would indeed, at least if the publisher offered one. In the case I was describing, the designer actually had an option agreement with yet another publisher before the incident I described. They had the game for a year, and when the option expired he approached the other company.

I know, too, that he got a nice option agreement with the company that

Any good publisher should also give you an "NDA" (Non-Disclosure Agreement) right from the word go... this prevents them from turning your document over to anyone, even within the company, until an agreement is made. Do be sure that your NDA includes

Going back to earlier discussion on write-offs, etc.

If you "pay yourself" a wage, where the hell does that get you? You can write off your wage expenses, but you have to pay tax on your wage income.

In order to have waged employees you need an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and you have to pay FICA and Social Security, etc., etc. Definitely not worth it. Furthermore, if you incorporate your company, then you will be paying taxes on your profits at the corporate level, and then again as wage income.
