*edit* oops this should have been a reply to
the critique post, i must have hit new post instead.

Well, a lot of entries again but the
names aren't inspiring like usual.
No Migrant Green Giant or Hickonomics.
Of course names aren't important but I usually
get a good chuckle out of names people come up with.

DN

p.s. I guess IT WAS THIS BIG is a good name.

I need a name for a game which could be summed up as follows:

Vegas Showdown style auctions where you bid on (three simultaneous) things. The things are basically the right to build a certain type of building (there are 4 types). Then there are lots of buildings of each type, that do different things - produce different types of resources (used to buy the buildings, a la Caylus), supply money, supply actions...

Some of the buildings have income or abilities that only work if you have a Worker on them (a la Puerto Rico).

You get points for buildings, and some buildings get you points via actions/workers, and some buildings give you bonuses for certain things at the end game. And also some of the 'high end' resources are worth points at the end of the game.

So it's pretty much a resource management auction game about efficiency, along the lines of Caylus and Puerto Rico.

Can anyone think of a good name for that?

Thanks,
Seth

P.S. for the record this is not actually my game I'm talking about... it's by alexfrog on BGG. But I'e played it and it's quite good.

Oooh, cool, a name thread!

What's the theme?

If this was in reference to my post, the buildings in the game are like Gold Mine, Farm, Ranch, Plantation, Factory, Gemcutter, Museum, Statue, Hotel, Casino, Restaurant... the resources are Food, Wood, Stone, Gold, Incense, Cloth, Gems. the money is allegedly Silver.

I don't know what the theme is supposed to be, or if there isn't one...

Before you said that - I was going to chime in with "Cottage Industry" - but it looks like its a bit more modern than that.

Maybe use a place name that is supposed to represent - like the other games do? Could it be set in the Western Frontier with a little tweaking of the building names? Most of the resources sound like that might work - maybe Rush of '49 or Frontier or something like that.

I guess we need to know where all this activity is taking place...and maybe even what time frame.

Sadly, I don't think the designer considered that too much... the Casino and Hotel are late game stuff, so it could e like Vegas or someplace from "back in the day" through the early Strip... Maybe that would be good, an old west town from the days of farms and ranches evolving up through casinos, hotels, and etc.

Hi everyone. Just registered on here.

Its my game and yes I am looking for a name.

The theme that exists so far is that developers are bidding on land to develop buildings. If some building names need to be changed to accomodate a theme that is ok. I have had a general idea of 'not completely modern but not too far in the past either'.

The building names were chosen to attempt to be reasonable for the mechanics of what the building does. Some buildings mechanics inspired their names, and some names for buildings that I felt should be included inspired their mechanics.

I like where Seth is going with it for the theme - but naming it the Strip might give folks the wrong idea. Sin City is taken already too. What about 'Vegas Ventures' or 'Selling Reno', or 'Tahoe Traders' or just "Nevada" - or something else not so lame. It might be safer to make up a fictional western town though, to avoid any potential conflicts. Maybe instead of getting points for building that big Cowboy sign - from the Golden Nugget?? - build something similar for big points.

Create a town

Without knowing anything more about the game, I like the fake town name idea. That gives you a lot of great marketing possibilities. You can also have a lot of fun with the website. You could, for example, have "news" about the place on the web site or even a "town paper".

Build some humor in, and you could really go crazy with it.

"Podunk"
"False Front, NV"
"Rising Gorge" (okay, I stole that one from Looney Tunes)
"The Biggest Little Town"
"One-Horse Town"
"Eminent Domain"
"Land Baron"
"Going Up"
"On This Site"
"Cornerstone"
"Urban Sprawl" (or "Urban Brawl")

It's a pity that "Boomtown" is taken; it would be perfect.

Or you might call it "Urbis." That's the Latin word for "city" and also the working title of a city-building game I've been developing. But the odds of my game ever seeing the light of day are slim to none, so if you're nice to me I might be persuaded to forget that I thought of it first. ;)

It really has nothing to do with vegas/gambling/etc except for a stray building name that could easily be changed.

[Johant] Sulyac ocir...
[OutsideLime] "Caylus Rico?"
My first thought was "Puertylus"

You could always try my favourite working title, "Abstract multi-player resource management game with paper-thin theme pasted on top."

Sulyac ocir... is of cource Caylus Rico!!!
Glad someone noticed what i thought was an obvious joke with a slice of irony just like Scurras working title.

Puertylus sounds great ;)

Puertylus... somehow that makes me think of Platypus. *shrug*

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming!

I just had this thought... since your Auctioning the right to build a Residential, Commercial, or Industrial building, that's like zoning... what about "Zone Of Influence"? or something like that?

Seth came up with 'Homestead', and I really like it. I think the theme can be made to fit with that very well.

Wouldn't it be easier to come up with the theme first, and the title second?

It's good to see you here, Alexfrog. I hope you have the opportunity to break a lot of members' designs. :)
