And yet another idea in desperate search of a theme

Greetings,

I'm working on a little card game in which players play in two teams of each two players and believe it or not, it's not a trick taking game.
Every round (a total of eight rounds) is divided into two phases: the first being to determine the players amount of AP in his second phase, the second is about creating more influence on five factions.

In the first phase the player on one team aren't allowed to communicate. A player offers a card (closed, so that not one other player can see which one) and then the other players bid on it.
In the second phase the players are allowed to communicate, but do this in secret so that the other players don't know. Players create influence by putting their colour tokens in one of the five faction bags.

There's a lot more to it than this, but this is all you need to think of a theme. I've already tried: russian and japanese mob, dwarves digging for gold - first dealing out the tools, next digging deeper on several pits (haven't we all at some point) and last a Once Upon A Time in Mexico inspired theme: Coup d'Etat. It all didn't feel refreshing (the dwarves' theme worked, but it just was lame).

If anyone has some fresh ideas, I'd be happy to hear them.
Thanks in advance,

Michiel

Here's a few ideas:

Town Hall/Local Government Politics
- Policy formation and compaigning followed by election

Some kind of market speculation or market driving e.g. oil speculation or commodities
- Gather inside information/generate market leading rumours followed by purchase of shares on the market

Advertising or Product Marketing - try and determine which product is going to be the next big thing
- Propose, develop and test products followed by testing them in the market
- products could be anything - financial products, cosmetics, fashion, cosumer electronics

In fact, thinking about all the above the freshest theme would seem to be 'fashion designers trying to make a splash with their new collections and determine whats hot and whats not next season.

You know... I even like your last suggestion best. Not instantly saying I'll take it... but I'll sure keep it in mind.
Local politics, I'm afraid, would remind a bit too much of Rocketville.

Drunken Backyard Baseball - Pulling together enough sober family members, neighbors, and friends to make a halfway decent team each inning, followed by how well they play.

It's a little bit too close to Queen's Necklace perhaps. :(

Could you do something with Superhero teams (Superhero team-up vs Supervillain team-up)? My thinking being that they do the 'non-communication' element before they team up.

Otherwise same thing with rival spy agencies (Mi5, FBI, Russkies etc) - maybe an 'Alias' style of thing? Or rival Superpowers presidents?

Most of these suggestions are theme of existing games, but that could apply to your game:
- Japaneese Warlords strugling to become shogun, making alliances with groups, using ninjas, merchants, geishas, gaijins and samurais to "push" their influence.
- Machiavelli: During the renaissance era, merchants would push their influence on politics to expend their empire.
- Prince of Thieves - Internal power struggle within a guild of thieves.

I think "market/shares/oil/speculation" concept proposed by TheReluctantGeneral is quite interesting as well. If you are looking for a humoristic theme, you could build your game around super hero girls struggling for the "sexiest/trendiest/fashion-est" super hero suit. Players would bid on suit parts such as cape, boots, mask, bra or whatever part of their super hero suit they wear, to improve their reputation (The one with the most flashy suit would make the newspaper frontpage).

I reckon a 'wife swapping party' theme would probably fit the game mechanic rather nicely.

I confidently suggest that this theme has never been done before, in any board game, anywhere....:-)
