Do you think there is any market for a magazine focusing on board games and board game design? Specifically, I am wondering if you think that the field is occupied by websites like BGG and BGDF.

The magazine could have sections for the various types of games (war, abstract, euro, etc.) including reviews and discussions of mechanics, themes, etc., a board game design section with tutorials, competitions, innovative ways to use different products to create prototypes, etc.

If you know of any other magazines out there that fit this description, please let me know.

Thanks for your input.

Where do I sign up?

I'd love to see something like this. I'd be glad to write for it as well. It could happen, I think. It would have a very small publication but it might be doable if you had some big names in the field line up behind it.

I certainly wouldn't consider myself "informed", but from what I know, thegamesjournal.com would be the place to start. It is a games magazine (albeit online only), but I don't know how well it lines up with what you're wanting. (As far as I'm concerned, I find the writing and topics over there pretty easy to pass up.)

I don't think the idea is particularly viable. BGG is now a force to be reckoned with -- they're even getting special attention from Avalon Hill and Days of Wonder. Their constituency is dedicated, their distribution channel is worldwide, they don't pay for their content, and they're getting the attention of the big name advertisers. That's tough to beat.

Also, once BGDF gets the wiki running, there will be a body of knowledge there that can probably (and hopefully) remove any perceived need for this.

In addition to those mentioned above and some others as well, BoardGameGeek offers an online version of Games International Magazine. There’s also ICv2. (http://www.icv2.com/index.html) Both offer printed subscriptions as well. But I don’t think either of them has a regular feature about game design per se, much less design competitions. So that part might be unique.

Board Games is a (slowly) growing niche market in America, but who knows if there’s enough interest yet to support a magazine? It depends on what level of response you’d be satisfied with.

Would this be available online only? I definitely don’t think there’s much of a market for a print magazine for Board Games. (But I could be wrong.)
