Boardgaming an RTS

My roommate fancies himself a game designer and is all excited by the notion of making a game that borrows heavily from the resource management/unit creation/combat elements of computer-based real-time strategy games.

His idea involves combining area movement with point-to-point movement within an area; exploiting resource "points" to build different sorts of combat or production units; and of course using thse units to fight opponents and conquer the board. Basically its any of a hundred RTS games mashed together and put into boardgame format.

My feeling is that someone *has* to have already done this, but my knowledge of boardgames is not sufficiently exhaustive for me to have any idea what may have already been produced that's similar in theme and design.

Any ideas?

Have you heard of Warcraft: The Boardgame?
