Hi - I am designing a dvd trivia game and need all your great advice. I would like the game to be played with two teams, the issue is how to interact with the dvd, the 2 options I am exploring are as follows:

1) have a buzzer for each team (so that every question is all play) and when the question comes up on the screen, have the team buzz in first to answer the question (the problem I see is that there may also be teams arguing with who pressed the buzzer first...), don't know f the buzzer creates enough of a gaming experience

2) have a dice with the different categories that each team roles to answer the question (so the questions are individual play) if that team gets it wrong the turn passes to the next team and so on

would really appreciate all your thoughts!! thanks

Why not use two dice? One to determine the category, the other to determine whether it's solo or competitive play.

Buzzers

Why not hook a bunch of buzzers together, and only the one that was hit first will illuminate/buzz ala gameshows like Family Feud? It shouldn't be too hard of an electronic feat. You could probably create such a device from hobby electronics kits.

While the buzzers might be nice, dice would obviously be MUCH cheaper.

I like the dice idea that Chip mentioned, if I understand him correctly.

One die would determine the category, and the other die would determine whether the team can answer as a whole or whether only one person from the team can answer.

Yes, dice would be cheaper, but a lock-out buzzer is actually VERY easy to create (as far as a prototype is concerned) IF you are handy with electronics and can follow some simple schematics. I actually built exactly what you're talking about. There are two switches, whoever hits their switch first lights their side's light, activates a buzzer and locks out their opponent's switch (exactly like the podium in Family Feud). It was actually for a homemade electronic fencing judge, but the function is identical to what you're talking about.

If you're interested, I can send you some crude schematics and a parts list (or I could upload them here for any who are interested).

Just remember, if you're not planning to self-publish (and with the DVD aspect, it doesn't sound like you are), it's up to the game company that buys your game to figure out the details of it (the eBay game has a much more complicated mechanism).

I would avoid the dice.

The DVD should be able to randomly pick a category, if that's the route you go.

I'm curious, what's the theme/premise/content of the trivia? And why did you decide DVD is the way to go?

Maybe you can have the DVD start-off by "randomly" selecting some type of who goes first question/info(maybe you can work it into the style of the rest of the game).

But what I am getting at, make up some crazy items like

"Whichever team has the player with the closest birthday to Easter this year, goes first."

"Whichever team has the player with the dirtiest shoe laces, goes first."

"Whichever team has the player that is closest to the age of X, goes first."

etc....

Not sure how your game would work with such an idea, but it might be interesting fit.

I am VERY interested (I love game shows and have always wanted a buzzer since I was a little kid). I am mechanically challenged but thankfully I have a big family and many people in this family are skilled with tools. Send me a PM or post them here I would much appreciate it.
