Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you know of any games similar to the one I'm working on, and what you think of the idea of the game in general.

I'm working on a board game that combines collectible miniatures and collectible cards. I suppose you could say it's Magic + D&D + Monopoly. :P

Anyway, there are some twists to the cards aspect... I know of no card game that works similar to mine (you actually *want* to discard cards).

The board game aspect is similar to D&D's hack n' slash, but using only a d10. Basically, each miniature has its own stats (which modify rolls) and abilities (which are triggered on certain rolls, the effects depending on the character and situation).

Anyway, I really want to know if any of this sounds very interesting. I would also like to know of other mini/card game hybrids so I can do some research on this type of game. Feel free to ask any questions, as well.

Thanks all!

Good news/bad news: While I can't think of any published games like this off-hand (check boardgamegeek.com), this is an idea that I've seen come up on this forum every once in a while. But the saying around here usually goes -- don't be discouraged just because your idea isn't 100% original, if you're excited about it, then keep working on it and have fun doing it. At the very least, you'll get experience working on things like efficiency, elegance, balance, and other game design basics. And you might stumble on something new in the process.

Good luck!

Yeah, I learned a long time ago that coming up with an "original" idea is nigh upon impossible, so my philosophy is "take a bit of this, a bit of that, and try to twist it somehow." That's why a few years ago, I wrote a little computer game named "Attack of the Blue Stickmen" - an isometric "RPG Chess" (as one person describes it) game where you walk around smiling at unhappy stickmen while picking flowers and catching butterflies... :P

Nothing really new there at all. It was just something I did for fun. Yet, it was my most popular computer game for quite a while.

Thanks to you both... I checked out those links hpox, really interesting stuff! It's amazing what kinds of games are out there...

This one may be a *lot* closer to what you are thinking of.

(I'll be picking this one up, as I'm a big fan of the PC game and I always thought it would work well in a board-game environment.)

theraje - I really feel the market is there for a game like this. MageKnight/Heroclix in a way is this. Now they include special Feat and Battlefield Cards which players collect and can use to enhance the game. You could have a booster come with certain components and have a starter be a basic set of what you need to play plus non collectible components.

Types of components that could be collectible:

Cards...duh!
Dice with special symbols or wording, etc a la Dragon Dice.
Pawns, Miniatures, or other 3d sculpts a la Heroclix or even something more basic
Tiles (like locations, obstacles, characters, monsters, etc)

The idea would be that someone could play straight out of the starter.

On another note, that Might and Magic game looks amazing! I am looking forward to that one! When does it go onsale?
