Think of a theme for yourself. How can you call your project if somebody else told you how to do it? Think of something simple. Then think of a mechanic to make the game. Then make it. It's much easier said then done, but just make something as easy as Monopoly (but not quite as long). Make it a sport or something.

Anything you have an interest in is worthy of designing a game around. It is amazing how a game can form from a little idea. Go to a local gaming store or Walmart (game store first though) and look at various types of games. This should help you.

Hey I have a degree in Graphic Design... it was a great time in school for me... but anyhow, This sounds like a great assignment! In Graphic Design you will be doing a lot of problem solving. When I seek out a game idea I usually just think of an subject/topic/theme that I am comfortable with... meaning something that I have some knowledge about. When you start designing pieces you'll be doing a lot of research.. well depending on your topic I suppose. Ah... anyhow... I sometimes challenge myself and take one object and stare at it and ask myself how I could make a game based on that object. This gets my creative juices flowing and many things just pop into my head. This just allows me to open my mind to new and bizarre ideas that I can use later in other game ideas.
I think the first question you should be asking yourself though is Who or what is the target audience? Once you figure this out then you should be able to fill in the gaps. I hope what I said made some sense... I tend to ramble and only write down half of my thoughts... they make sense to me in my head but i lose people sometimes. :?
Anyhow Good luck!!... if ya have any questions just send me an instant message on AIM
