Hey everybody, I am happy to be back. (3 weeks I think)

I have been working on my stratagy board/card game, (there have been other threads in the same one) and one thing it requires is a way to distingush between all pieces(dice).

The dice are supposed to show which player they belong to, how many hitpoints it has, and what pile of cards it is linked with. (I got rid of the move points in favor of a simpler system). I have already decided that the number shown on the top of the die is the hitpoints.

I was thinking that I might need to make custom dice, or use dozens of different colored dice, but I had an idea when looking at my polygonal dice for role-playing. I could make it so the number of sides the dice has determines what pile it goes with, however if I do this the dice will have a different range of numbers for the hitpoints.

Should I make it so all units have 5 maximum hitpoints, even if a piece has 20 sides? Or should I attept to squeze more information into dice with more sides, which would make idenical creatures no longer idenical?

well i'm not to sure what to suggest but i guess you should just buy some colored D6 one color for each player, then paint the pips (small dots) the color of the deck they are linked with. all though the idea of using different dice may be a good one as you could have certain parts have more Hit points than others. thats all the help i can give you so far.

Hmm, painting the pips of dice. Thats an interesting idea. I probably would do that if I decide to have all of the dice be D6 dice.

I have been wondering if I should have certain creatures with more or less hp. You need to pick a dice that can handle the max hp, and if they are already used up for other creatures, tough luck. Although this would require that you could have only one creature with more than 12 max-hp on at a time, while all the dice could be used to represent creatures with 3 or less max hp.

Hey there PT314,

Super suggested a good idea for doing what you'd like by coloring the pips yourself.

I'd like to point out though, I thought the idea of having all the units use a set amount of HP may provide more potential with what you could do with the dice. And while it may seem like units no longer have a strength or weakness based on HP, there is still plenty of room for unit strengths and weaknesses based on unit strength or abilities.

If nothing else, I'd experient with the "all units have the same HP" and see where that takes the design. If you don't like it, you can always go to another system.

Good luck!

Don't forget size as an option, although you probably don't want too many differently sized (six-sided) dice, so it's not a HUGE option :)

how about little dice "caddies"? a little egg crate number, maybe. that could keep them in formation. or cup or something... you could label those and somehow label the stacks of cards...

or do the dice in a certain group not always stay together?

if not then never mind.

you know what would be cool... dice made of a plastic you could rub a certain non toxic chemical onto them to change the color...

or a little space you could place different colored ... things... inside...

sorry, i'm rambling now...
