I have a unit in a game that gives a +1 bonus to all units fighting alongside it.

For the counter I want to indicate this probably with a +1.

Is it more intuitive for the players to have the value of the unit listed as 2, and it gives itself a bonus up to 3.

Or is it better to give the unit a value of 3, and exclude itself from its bonus?

Both are somewhat annoying.

Would it be better to just have a separate unit to represent the leader and give it no value?

I vote for excluding the unit from it's own bonus. It makes perfect sense in my head, but I can't explain it. It seems odd to have a bonus that always applies to the unit need to be calculated every time you look at it.

Just my thought.

I agree, you said that it gives a bonus to all the units fighting alongside it and the unit is not fighting alongside itself (I assume, unless the game is much more complicated than I think it is), so it cannot receive its own bonus. Just my own personal logic.

good luck

First, I'm with everyone else. Exclude the unit from its own bonus, Venga's logic is good and shouldn't be a problem for players.

Are there so many different units that you feel you need to indicate the +1 with a "+1" marking of some kind, as a reminder to players? You seem to be concerned that players will see the +1 and try to argue that it applies to itself as well...

Unless you have a very large number of different unit types, I don't think you need the marking. No chess piece is marked with a diagram of its moves... players learn them and quickly remember them. In newer Axis & Allies games there's an Artillery unit which gets its own attack and which gives a +1 to any Infantry or Marine it accompanies... it has its own distinct shape (I assume the units in your game will have their own images distinct from each other as well) and no visual indication of the +1, but trust me, nobody ever forgets the bonus!

Yep. I agree with everyone else. The unit should not include itself in the bonus. If you want to add in a symbol to show that it has this bonus, why not give it a flag or some other identifying mark that fits the theme of the unit instead of placing a big "+1" on the piece?

I prefer that it doesn't give a bonus to itself. I also for some reason dislike units that don't have a combat strength (I prefer when commanders count as a combat unit).

I agree with Outside Lime. I don't think you need to add the +1 onto the unit itself. If it's appropriately themed it'll be easily remembered.

Thank you all for the input. I will exclude the unit from its bonus, as that seems to be the way 5/5 people think :).

As to the +1 vs Graphic, I'm ok with either one, I'm just no where near that stage yet.

"I don't think we are gonna win this battle Bob...."

"Cheer up Vinnie! The boss has a flag!"

"A flag! I love those things! Lets kick some Roman ass!"
