Is this a kid's game?

I thought of a theme for a game, told it to my wife and she told me it sounded like a kid's game. I got thinking about it afterwards (since i didn't intend it to be a children's game) and could see where she was right, but still don't really know. So I'm sharing it here, and wondering what everyone thinks.

The basics of the game involves each player having a set number of cars, which they must start in one part of the board (which is one big city) and move those cars to a certain destination on a board (I guess in a small way it resembles Ticket to Ride by Alan Moon.)

Players get action points to use on moving their car by making the car's speeds faster or slower. The car cannot turn unless the speed is at 1. Players also can use their points on changing the stoplights from red to green or green to red. If a player runs a red light they get a ticket, which takes away one of their action points.

That's all I got so far, but I wanted some feedback to know if this sounds like a game all ages would enjoy or just kids.

Thanks in advance to all that post.

It sounds like a pretty good game. I don't think that this game sounds to "kiddy", and could be a blast to play with a few players.

The only suggestion I would make is that running a red light should cost 2 action points, because turning a light from red to green already costs 1 point. Why would a player spend 1 point to turn a light green if they're only going to get fined 1 point for running a red.

Thanks for the quick answer. This is what I was thinking as well.

This is a good suggestion. I haven't put a ruleset together yet, but what i've thought of so far, is tickets would be a permanent thing. The one point is lost permanently, at least until you can pay for the ticket (I don't know how that will work either.) Also, their will be a yellow light too. When players switch a light from green to red, it will go to yellow first. That will give players a turn to slow down if they can. Plus, I'll probably design it so that the lights will change, and then the cars will move, making it impossible to change a light from green to red to green without the cars moving first.

I have the GDW slot in a few weeks, and I may use this game for that slot. Plus I have so many other games I'm working on that this game may not be able to get a full ruleset until then.

Thanks again for your help.

It does not sound kiddy from the description that you wrote. I think kids would play it though. I have heard reports of teachers using boardgames, and wargames and the kids absolutly loving it. In this case I told someoen about juniorgeneral.org, and then they ran a battle of traglager battle for his 32 11 year old students. He said that they really enjoyed it. This is of course the old school move with rulers type of ship to ship battle.

Most of my games are tested between my family and me. So usally kids will play any game. You should if u want it to appeal directly to childern keep the rules extremely simple and particulary playtest it with childern. For there is nothing that tells you what they want to play like playing it once with them :-).

Good luck,
