Resource Other Than "Mana"

I am currently working on a card set in a hellish world, where six types of evil creatures are at war.

Well, anyway, I need a resource that allows players to bring out characters and cast spells. The only one I can really think of is Mana, but sence it doesn't really fit with the theme of my game (and WoTC probably has it copyrighted), I really need a new type of resource. But the problem is, I can't think of anything.

Any ideas?

I have an idea. I had one anyway- got it when I read a penny arcade newspost about Warlocks. I'll see if I can find it... brb.

...

Aha! Thanks to the BGDF search engine I found my old post about it, which had the date of the PA strip... http://www.penny-arcade.com/news.php3?date=2004-8-25

Here's my previous post as well:

So the currency could be souls or something.

Question for you,

Are you looking to find a single resource (units of EVIL) or a group of resources (Death, Suffering/Pain, Souls, Unholiness)?

I'm not sure what you mean.

Ok I will try again, since even when I read my post, I see the confusion (sorry about that)....

Since you stated the game contains 6 different evil types of creatures, I was just trying to find out if all of the different creatures just use a single "mana" type for activation, or are you doing something similar to Forest, Plains, Mountains, etc as in MTG? If so I was just trying to suggest some types of mana for your game (Death, Suffering/Pain, Souls, Unholiness).

As for just a word replacement for "mana", I think that depends on how the "mana" concept works in your game. If you have different types of this "mana" the word you use, should attempt to cover this. So as an example (using MTG and converting to something more specific to your theme),

Mana is replaced by "Evil"
Plains is replaced by "Souls"
Forest is replaced by "Suffering"
Swamp is replaced by "Death"
etc.
etc..

Does this make anymore sense?

Yes, it does.

When I first began to design the game, I thought about a single "mana" resource. But now that I think about it, it would just make more sence to make six different resources, because the races are so drastiaclly different.
But the suggestions given are kind of abstract to the storyline of the game. But they did get me thinking about the things I could use. What I could do is, instead of using "souls" as a resource for one race or "death" for another, make the resource specific to what the races are.
For example, the Vampires' resource would be blood and the Magmaians' (evil creatures born from fire and lava) would be flames.

I would like to thank everyone who replied for their input.

This only makes sense really if the resources are intertwined- like in Magic it works because you can play whatever cards you want, as long as you can play the appropriate resources. If the 'different resources' are really the same, but just called "blood" if vampires use it or "fire" if magmaians use it then it's not useful.

That said, I think you could do some really interesting things by basing a resource around each race. Are the races like colors in Magic (where anyone can use any combination of races, so long as thay have the appropriate resources to play them)? Or is it more like 1 player is the Vampires and one is the Magmaians?

Based on these posts and the ideas I already had for the game, if I put six different types of resource, they would be:

*Vampires: Blood
*Lycans: Moons
*Drow (Born evil humans): Prayer (Drow worship evil gods)
*Nightwalkers (Born of pure-evil energy): ? (Can't really think of anything for these people)
*Magmaians (See above posts): Flames

Now, it wouldn't be pointless, because each race has race specific spells, etc. If you were to recruit characters (put them into play to battle), you would need to use the given amount of resource of the race of the character.

But spells, on the other hand, would only be of one resource because that would be the race that had either first used it or created it. It would not require that the player using would be playing that race, just that they had the resource. As Seth said, the races would be similar to the colors in Magic, where any player could use any race as long as they have the resources.

Another thing that MTG does really well is mix the Colors/races on a number of cards. You could do this by having a Lycan Vampire who requires power from the moon as well as blood. Just some ideas...

Nightwalker's could feed on Shadow or darkness or something...

This could also give you direct opposites, ala magic, the nightwalkers oppose the Lycans and the Magmaians because darkness/shadow opposes fire and the moon.

Why not just units of evil?

Or darkness, shadow, terror and/or fear. Hmm, maybe you could let them steal the chi/ki of others. (Chi/ki, is the living energy of people)

Or how about just seeing how your regular gaming group reacts when you suggest playing Monopoly...

howls... yowls... screams... wailing and gnashing of teeth... manic laughter...

Speaking about WOTC you might want to check the name Drow if its trademarked or something as in DND Drow is the race of dark-elves (evil)

just a suggestion
