Hey Guys,

I'm stumped and I need a little push to get moving again. I've been designing a card game using the standard 52 cards and now that I've got it built I don't want to use the standard 52 cards. I want to be able to sell it as it's own game with it's own custom deck. The problem I'm having is designing the cards in such a way to mimick the standard 52 card way to play the game.

I'm looking for way to create sets. The game is all about finding sets where certain sets are better than others (think of poker hands. That's actually what I've been using). So now I need a new card face and a new way to organize the cards to create sets that can be ranked.

I hope this isn't too confusing. Here's an example of an idea I've come up with:

Each card has a colour and a number between 1 and 12 (with one being the best and ten the worst). There are five colours in total: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, & Orange. And that's it. The goal is very similar to poker hands where you can create a flush by having all one colour, or a straight, or simply have the number 1 as your high card.

That's about the best I can do without destroying my brain thinking about ways to organize and rank cards. Does anybody else have any ideas that I can at least think about? Just throw anything down to give me a new thread to start on. I'm totally absorbed and can't get my head out of numbers and colours. Crazy, I know.

Don't know if my "stream of consciousness" stuff ever helps anyone, but here goes:

First thing that popped into my head was a 'food chain' of animals - but that might be too close to Frank's Zoo. The suits could be mammals, sea, birds, reptiles, one-celled or whatever. Within each suit, the top of the food chain would appear as rank 1 - such as a lion, shark, eagle, croc, and amoeba??

What if you reversed the ranks and made 12 best and 1 worst - then you could use commodities, precious stones, or goods. Having 12 rubies would be better than one, for example.

Or call the suits different currencies from around the world - a card hand could be 4-yen, 10-yen, 7-euros, 2-euros, 5 bucks, etc.

Yeah - that just made things worse, didn't it... :)

oohhh, I like the animal idea. That's cool! I'll have to think further on that one. Great ideas! That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for. I've never heard of Franks Zoo. I'll have to take a look. To pull it away from real world animals I could do alien animals, where they are all made up creatures. Or mythical creatures - like five different colours of Dragons as the top card!!

See you've already got me thinking... perfect. Thanks a bundle!
