I sent my submission in on the 2nd. Now for 9 months of waiting to find out if i have made the cut. I am not an overly patient man so i'll will have to find a way to forget about it until the winner is announced.

It takes that long! Well, I think when I find out, I'd forgotten about it so much that I won't even remember creating the game...

I hear last year there were over 50 submissions. If every judge had to attempt to play each game at least once it could take quite a long time. Some would be eliminated quickly and others might get a judges attention enough that they would like to play it multiple times before moving on to the next entry.

I just received a reply about my submission. It said they expect that the winner will be announced in April. So its more like 4 or 5 months.

That is much better although still a long time, but it is worth it if they judge every game with the time it is needed to judge them worthily.

Just when I thought I couldn't come up with an interesting take on the Shared Piece idea, this popped into my head:

Fully submitted for the contest and anyone's comments.

An interesting game that makes very good use for the board. There seems to be some strategy in it, with a good amount of luck. Good design!

About Karibbea

I particularly like the opening story. It's details like this that make the difference in how much notice a game will get. I would not be surprised if it gets listed at about.games.com regardless if it wins or not.

I just submitted my entry into this years About.com Shared Game Pieces contest. Here is a link to the ruleset for anyone interested. http://www.tjgames.com/wizard.html
Good Luck to anyone else that has also submitted a game and to those of you that haven't yet but plan to, remember the deadline is December 31, 2003, at noon Eastern US time, which will be here really fast. 8O

I as well have submitted my game, although it isn't complete (I wanted to put pictures of examples, but I ran out of time.) I've put it into my journal, which if the link works, I've placed on here.

I just read the rules for Wizard's Garden and have to say that it is a clever idea for a game and seems fresh and interesting even with the limitations that was placed on creating these games for the competetion.
Good luck with your game in the contest.

I was considering writing an opening story for my entry, but it seemed to me that it would just draw the judges attention away from the game itself (which is, of course, abstract).

I also used a chess board, but the 4 knights instead of a king. My story was that the knights are tax collectors that have to visit every space in the kingdom (chess board).

It's too late now since my entry is submitted without the story  .

I got in too with a game called "Mob Mentality" ... a couple of the regulars here have seen the rules for it, but I haven't gotten them "webified" quite yet. Hopefully over the next week or so, then I'll post a link.

It's played on a standard 8x8 chessboard with most of the pieces in a standard chess set. I didn't put a story to it ... so we'll see how it plays with the judges.

Anyone heard anything about this competition? When I submitted mine, they said it should be around April before we would hear anything about it. April has come and gone and haven't seen anything, maybe they got a lot of entries and are still going through them all.

I've been wondering the same thing and was thinking about asking here also. Hopefully it is soon. Good luck to all who entered...

Wow that was a quick answer. I look every often at About's site for games and they haven't said a word since the contest deadline was over.
Good luck to all who entered here!

EDIT: After going to the Yahoo Game Design group, someone said just recently that they the entries are still being looked at, but some will be discussed in an Abstract Magazine's next issue.

Maybe they were meaning April of 2005?

I am not figuring on getting too high, I left an important rule out of my game before i sent it to them.

I don’t want to discourage anyone but a friend of mine who made it to the finals for the last contest received and e-mail telling him so. Unless they have changed this policy or are way behind on judging I imagine that if you have not received an e-mail by now you’re not in the running.
