I post this just to share some thoughts I have about gamedesigning and to hopefully start some discussion.

I never played Puerto Rico but I look foward to trying it!

Also, I agree completely about the simplicity issue. The word "simple" looks to be frowned up by (hardcore) "gamers" because they look at it like it

Some random thoughts about gamedesigning

When someone refers to "keeping it simple" it may mean "Elegant, Clear and Concise" or it may simply mean keeping the fundamentals simple. Chess is a wonderful example of simple. I can explain all of the rules of chess in a minute or two, but the elegance comes when one discovers the depth of tactics and strategies. Settlers is another fairly simple game. When I think simple, I think about it in terms of rules and how long they take to explain without delving into all the strategies.

Puerto Rico is at heart a simple game; most of complexities originate with the various buildings and how they work together to support different strategies. Simple at heart, yet I would agree it is a more complicated game. To me it
