I had an idea for a tile based "RPG" board game, and I figured i'd get some reactions on it from you kind folks :)

Intead of me rambling on and trying to explain everything, there's a rough copy of the initial rules here http://www.winter-wind.com/files/obsidian/obsidiandreams.doc

Keep in mind that these rules are in a VERY rough stage right now. I'm in the middle of printing tiles anc creating cards so I can test some of the mechanics. I think i'm heading in the right direction with this since my first draft is not entirely based on luck like my other designs have been :)

Let me know what you might think, I'm not really looking for actually C&C on the rules as much as just if the idea is interesting. If there's at least some interest i'll put some serious effort into this and hopefully get it into the GDW eventually.

I like it and would be interested in seeing more development (game tiles, cards, etc.). I especially like the fact that players each have their own private goals. Players may end up accidentally helping another player in the pursuit of their own goal.

I also like the inclusion of the narrative elements. I just finished reading an excellent article by Mike Siggins about "Narrative and Atmoshpere in Boardgame Systems." I would be very interested to hear how yours works in. You mention benefits at the end of the narreative element, is it a preset narrative or are there decisions that the player can make that will affect the outcome of the narrative (possibly not getting the reward)?

There are going to be some choices with the narrative. Some really bad choices by a player will end up causing them to have to do a lot more to achieve their goal. Also, failing story card missions will set players back a bit, but do not take them out of the game.

Basically the global event of the board will be the same in the end, but the way players get to that climax will change on the way they play.

All in all, if you make the right choices, lay the tiles in a smart manner, and use your items wisely, you'll complete your goal a lot quicker than someone who makes poor choices, cannot complete their missions, and blows their item cards on events that can be completed by rolling an unmodified die.

I have a lot of work to do on this, but i'm really hoping it works out.

Here is the basic blank map tile and the game characters

Thanks for the added info! Also, are items retained or lost upon use? It seemed to me from the example in the instructions that a sword (+1 bonus) was lost upon use. That may just be a clarification needed, but if not, you may want to consider players keeping and accumulating items (even if their accumulation is limited).

Items would be discarded upon use unless otherwise stated. Certain items like climbing gear (that let a player move over mountain tiles, not yet in the rules) will stay in play until the end of the game.
