Chess in colour

Hello ,

I have been developing an alternative chess game
(played in colour) that uses the same moves as traditional chess but
changed from a competitive to a co-operative game.
It encourages team work and creative thinking.
Recently i managed to make those boardgames into a computer game
playable online.
The first version can be seen at

http://www.theapplegallery.com/Chess/Game_Colour_1.htm

UPDATE
Could anyone check if the applet is loading? We have had problems on certain machines. Here's the direct link to the applet http://www.theapplegallery.com/Chess/chess.html
If possible could you give me as much info on your system?
Thanks

Some interesting aspects about the game

- Could be used to teach children the basics of chess in a fun way.
- Games are played with a co-operative mindset while tournaments can
give them a competetive capacity.
- Can be played online globally in a manner similar to correspondence chess
- While beginners can play an easy introductory game, mental wizards
can make combinations and study end games.

your feedback, suggestions appreciated

In a word, "no". I have NO idea on how to play this game. And I have no idea (or maybe a marginal idea) regarding what "matching pieces to make a valid move" means.

Also, you have so many pages and so many piece meal rules on the linked pages, etc. that it's sort of baffling (you have multiple looks to the board, some with numbers, some without, for instance). Pick a "look" for the game and stick with it. ONE LOOK.

Have one main page. Have one link to a COMPREHENSIVE rulebook with a few sample valid moves. Then have one link to a sample game board.

Also, you should keep in mind that for any given board configuration, there will be a best set of moves. Making this more of a puzzle than a game. To make it more interesting you should randomize which pieces have which colors and you should have the game tell you the minimum number of moves required to "solve" the board.

I think it's fine the way it is,

brilliant.
doesn't have to be colors, can be black and white with shapes and
designs, but your use of colors is fantastic.

unique and beautiful experience!

Did you go to the webpage, like me? Or straight to the java applet?

The java app won't load for me.

The direct X download is complaining about the non-existence of a bg.jpg file.

And from the web page itself, it's patently unclear how to play.

It says you can only make a valid move by moving matching pieces? Do you move two pieces simultaneously?

If you mean you can only make a valid CAPTURE against a piece with a matching color then say that. Then the rules would be:

OBJECTIVE: Eliminate all pieces from the board (not to capture the opposing king).

RULES: Pieces move like chess but captures can only be made against a piece that has an internal color that matches the internal color of the capturing piece. When a capture is made, remove both the captured piece and the capturing piece from the board.

Is this what you meant to say? 'Cause that's not what the rules say now.

Even then, you need to address rules for pawn promotion (either it doesn't happen, or it does).

Regarding your un-numbered game (the one with gold vs. white pieces with colored centers), I'd recommend picking colors which are strongly dissimilar from each other. Some of the colors were really quite close to each other. Is it your intention that sometimes more than 2 pieces on the board share a color?

The games will be played in a variety of ways, therefore i'm showing a variety of different pieces and how they interact.

I guess you're right that i have to describe the rules a bit clearer,i've explained it trough visuals but could make the writing a bit clearer, thanks

It seems to be working on some machines and not on others.

Pawn promotion is enabled with the java version

Don't do that. Show the user ONE game. Just one. Make sure the reader gets it. Then have links to alternate versions of the game.

Your website is too busy right now. It's like "here's a game, with minimal rules and I'll show you 3 ways to play it, all at the same time." Show ONE way to play before going on to the next way.

Also, I think your numbered game should be just an un-colored game with numbers on the pieces. I actually found the rainbow circles to be visually distracting. Whereas I thought the gold and white chess version was very attractive and my primary complaint there was that the colors were sometimes too similar.
