Hiya!

Is there any interest in a game designers meetup to share our ideas and playtest each other games?

Currently, we're two hobbyist and we tested his two-player game 4 times. So far, It's been fun and productive.

We spotted a few people from Montreal (dr_Edge69, RookieDesign, Jebbou and Larienna) and were wondering if you guys were interested in joining us?

If there are other members or lurkers from Montreal, please contact me so we can get something organized.

Cheers!

EDIT: Our first meeting was decided to be:

June 10th, 10:00 AM. We will meetup at the Second Cup downtown. By metro, go to Guy-Concordia station (green line) and exit by Sortie Guy. Turn left and go down Guy street. Then you will be on Ste-Catherine. Go toward the Faubourg Ste-Catherine (see metro map). Second Cup is there.

Then we eat, and if there's enough interest, we will continue our discussion and play some games in a public place near the coffee shop:

Good morning!

I think that would be a great idea. How often do you currently meet? Also, in which part of Montreal do you guys live. I am asking since I live on the south shore, and that I travel by bus/metro/train.

Sweet,

I also travel by bus and metro. I live near Metro Monk and Angrignon.

I will ask François when he's available (or maybe he will stop lurking and post here!?) then I give you guys an update.

PS: This coming weekend, I cannot. But the next one (19, 20, 21) would be good for me.

Yes it could be a good idea to meet each other. I live in montreal-north. So we somewhat live at the 4 corners of the city (^_^).

I have a proposition, on may 27th, 28th, there is a D&D miniature tournament ( I intended to make another post on this forum with all the info) that takes place at my college. If things goes correctly, I might be a part of the staff. If I have free time during the convention, they don't mind that we play other board games while the tournament is active. We would also probably have access to all the games in the game club.

So this would be the perfect gathering place. On the other hand, there is and entrance fee of 25$, but I think it is only for the contestants, I'll contact the admin and ask.

Just for my curiosity: Who can speak french and who can only speak english?

FYI, we hold quarterly playtest gatherings down here in Albany NY, which is probably only about 4 hours or so from Montreal. Our next one is this Saturday, May 13. PM me if interested!

François and I both speak french and english.

Jeff, If only I had a car... It's just too expensive!! After we meet a few times here in Montreal, it would be cool to go to your gathering as a group from and split the gas. As a matter of fact, when we organize something here, you guys are invited also.

Jebbou, I forgot to answer your question! We met twice for playtesting purpose. But we also meet occasionally for regular gaming.

I'll try to join you guys. If we fix a date and time I'll try to hop in. Being a long time gamer in the lower mid thirties with two kids doesn't give me all the freedom of my college time.

I'm living on the south shore and I have a car, I can transport few people as long as we plan it correctly.

I can speak both French and English no problem.

Hi,

Although I speak French more fluently, it could be a good opportunity to practice my English, if it can make things more easier for someone else. At worse, we could have Frenglish sessions:D . I think language would not be a barrier, since at least everyone can post in English on this forum.

Also, even though I am booked for the three next weekends, I could manage to free myself for short gaming sessions in the weekdays evening. I work downtown Montreal, thus I could reach any of you guys more easily.

Regards,

Jeb

I'm also booked for the 13th, 14th and the 27th. The 28th could be a possibility. Weekdays evenings can be good also, as long as i know in advance.

Thanks Jeff for the invitation, when our group is more solid and we decide to go, it'll be fun!

I also speak both french and english.

OK, I have some news. From what I know, My school is oponed all summer. So at anytime, we can gather ourselft in the cafeteria or in the game club, I can ask for the key. Still, I am not sure of the opening hours, I'll have to ask, and we will have to enter in the main entrance so that the security can see us.

If you want to gather after may 27th and 28th, it's OK, it will fit with my schedule.

Now for the location, since everybody seems to live on the south shore and at least 2 of you near a metro, "College de maisonneuve" seems like a good location since it is near the south shore and a metro. But If you come by car, there might be some parking restriction around the college. So for those who lives on the south shore, I suggest you park at metro "Longeuil" and come by metro.

I am openend to other location suggestion.

Now for the gathering, I first tought that we could see each other at least once, but if you want to playtest regularly, I might be available to play once each 2 weeks when my friends will start again their D&D game that I don't want to participate in.

Yes, seeing each other once beforehand is always good. Maisonneuve college is good for me.

Sundays are good for me too. For example, I'll be free the 21 or 28.

Larienna, good idea for the location. It's fine with me. College Maisonneuve is near Metro Pie-IX or Joliette.

College de maisonneuve is 3 streets west of Pie-IX.

I have asked about the openning hours, when the session ends, it should be open either from 7h to 17h or from 7h to 18h. So we can stay there almost all day. You can bring your luch for dinner, there should be microwaves. Else, there is 2 restaurants near the college "Moe's" and "La belle province"

The main entrance is in the parking on sherbrooke.

I can make a map if you want. ( next post ).

I'll be available all summer but when school start again, I'll lack of free time, the sessions are becoming heavier.

Here are the maps. First there is the exterior map :

The main entrance is near the red star. I placed a M inside a circle to indicate the metro locations. Then there is the interior map. We can play either at the cateferia or the game club.

So if you follow the path correctly, you should go down to floor 2 by using the stairs before reaching the cafeteria or game club.

I'll probably wait for everybody in the lobby of the main entrance for the first day.

So as a first meeting, I suggest the following day and time :

Saturday, June 3rd, 2006 at 9h00.
It should end around 17h00

Bring all the prototypes you have and we'll play a few of them. Bring either a lunch or some money to buy food.

June 3rd "should" be ok for me, i'll have to see later in the month. I'll keep you posted on that.

June 3rd is the Concordia Boardgames Meetup (it's a recurring event, each first saturday of the month) so I would prefer the second saturday (June 10th) or any sunday.

But if there's enough interests for the 3rd. I'll go to this meeting we're planning instead of Concordia.

Cheers

Albany isn't far from Montreal :-)

Just to keep you up to date, our Albany group got rescheduled to this coming weekend, May 20. We'd gladly welcome any Montreal folks (and others too).

The format generally looks like this ...
-Designers arrive at/around noon
-Other guinnea pigs/playtesters arrive by 5/5:30 and we order pizza
-Sometime around 10/11 we kick everyone out :-)

If you're interested just contact me and I'll send you directions and whatnot.

peace,
Tom

Cool! The date has been chosen. June 10.

I'd like to discuss the location of our first meeting. The school Larienna suggested would good to playtest games but for our first meeting maybe we should meet downtown in a more relaxed environment. François suggested a coffee shop (for example the "Second Cup" corner of Peel & St-Catherine) or something similar.

This is our suggestions of what could be on the agenda for this first meeting:

- Meet each other, introduce ourselves and some of our ideas.
- Discuss how we want to proceed with future meetings.
- Game mechanics discussions and stuff like that.
- Maybe play a couple of published boardgames.

So, what do you guys think?

That sounds great hpox, this is a good way to get to know each other. Realisticaly, some of us might not like one another and this way, we can at least be more objective and know in advance before showing stuff that might be dear to us(as they are our creations, and let's just say most humans pratice attachment on a regular basis, i know i do!!! hehehe).

So? Second cup or Starbucks? I prefer the later, but i'm open to suggestions. Where are the best tables? We will need space if we want to play games.

Playing games cool. What do you have in mind. Twiligth Imperium 3. Ok just kidding.

Some card games like bonhanza or 6nimnt (sp??).

I should be able to make it for few hours on June 10th.

I don't mind about the location as long as it is not packed.

Have a good day.

There problem with a restaurant , cafe or any other commercial place is :

1- We must buy their stuff.
2- We can't stay there indefinitely.
3- We can't play games in their store.

So I think it will have to stay short, at most an hour or two.

If it is what you want, I don't mind

If you want to gather somewhere downtown, just give a few indication on how to get there ( ex: metro station ) because I can get lost easily, especially downtown: I don't go there often.

Good points. I personally rarely go to coffee shops so I don't know. But François told me they were a good place for meetings like these. I will make sure to buy enough coffee so they don't kick us out.

François will scout out a good location for us and report back soon. :)

How about we stay at the coffee shop for about two hours. Enough time for everyone to meet there, introduce ourselves and chat about the group?

After that, we can move out to a public place to continue chatting and play some games. (For example, on corner of Guy and Ste-Catherine, there's a Concordia building with very large wooden tables and a view on Ste-Chatherine)

Next question is: : At what time can you be there?

My answer: From 10:00 AM to 19:00 PM. But I would prefer after lunch, around 13:00 PM.

Any time for me is good. 10 am is usefull: there is much less people in restaurants or coffee shops at that time, 13pm is very busy with people working downtown.

I'm good with the program: Concordia is a good place to keep it going. There are at least 3 coffee shops VERY close (in front of the describded building!), second cup, coffee depot an starbucks...anywhere you guys want to go i'm up to it.

I would prefer 10 AM because, I would like to get back home near 6 PM since my friends are generally comming at my place on saturdays. But it's possible that things can changes. Anyways, I can always leave sooner.

Ok, so it sounds like 10:00 is best for most. We will go with that. :)

Our official first meeting will be in two weeks:

June 10th, 10:00 AM. We will meetup at the Second Cup downtown. By metro, go to Guy-Concordia station (green line) and exit by Sortie Guy. Turn left and go down Guy street. Then you will be on Ste-Catherine. Go toward the Faubourg Ste-Catherine (see metro map). Second Cup is there.

Cool, I should be able to find the place. The indications seems clear enough.

If you want to recognise me, I have short hair and glasses. I should be wearing a purple pair of shorts and I might have a marine blue/yellow bag from "Boreal".
