How do you make a hex map on a photo background?

I want to make a playfield of sort of a sandy lot. I also want it to be divided up into hex areas. Is there a way to superimpose a hex map onto a photo play field? If so, what do I need to get in order to make it so and if not are there any other suggestions as to what I might try instead. A hex map would be best but I could get away with a grid map as well.

thanks

Using a hexgrid and the photo as different layers in Photoshop (or some similar program) will probably work wonders. I make my historical map this way, scanning the actual map and putting it in the back ground, inserting a hexgrid in the foreground and painting the game map in a few layers in between.

Yeah, any graphics software that supports layers - which would be most of them! - will let you do this.
I couldn't do anything without the layers facility of Paint Shop Pro (which does everything I want for free!)

So yeah, you stick the picture on the background layer and the hex grid on the top layer, and often things like text labels on layers in between.

Last time I checked Paint Shop pro wasn't free. Do you know something I don't know?

Well I'm still using version 5, which was effectively free at one point (it was available for download and on a number of magazine cover disks.) And I have rarely felt that I needed a feature that it didn't have.
Then again, I'm only an amateur who knows his limitations :-) "Proper" designers would no doubt demand some more sophisticated tools.

Wow. Version 5? I've been using version 7 for about 8 years. I can't imagine how old version 5 is. I wonder if it's still available for download anywhere.

Actually, if you simply want to apply a grid or hex pattern over an existing picture, MS Paint can do the job as well. The grid/hex pattern needs to be in 2 colors (grid vs. background) ... copy the whole thing and paste it onto your picture using the "one color transparent" feature when pasting into Paint.

Thanks guys. I will try the MS Paint thing first and then if I'm not able to get it running I'll go borrow my Mum's copy of Paint Shop. I never realized how hard it was to get these things moving until I actually started putting in time. I'm glad Ive got a job to relax myself at... sometimes this is hard.
