Downloadable build-yourself board games

I have practically no experience with selling downloadable board games but I have sold a lot of RPG PDFs.

If you want to sell downloadable games I recommend taking a look at RPGNow. That's the site I earn most of my money at and they sell downloadable board and card games.

I guess it all comes down to selling the right product in the right place to the right people. It would seem from a glance at RPGnow that there are a variety of dowloadable games that seem to do very well. I certainly am not very interested in dowloading and assembling my own game, but it looks like there are those that will and, it would seem, enough to support a modest industry.

That would seem promising to those interested in selling their games this way. I'm not sure of RPGnow's procedure for selling a game, but you may want to contact them and see if they want to carry your game. Seems like they have tapped a market and have customers at the ready. Whatever they charge would probably be offset by the increased volume of sales.

For example, a 15$ game could sell the rules for 5$ and the print-out for 10$. You pay 5$, and look at the rules. If you like the game, you download the printout. In this way, if you don't like the game, you won't waste all your money.

I did like that some of the games on RPGnow included demo versions to show some of the rules and the components. Would be nice if more had that, but I assume that the demo PDF's are provided by the game publisher for inclusion.

I wouldn't suggest a method that you mention whereby someone pays for the rules and then pays separately for the components if they like the rules. There may be precedent to support this business model, but it seems counter to the way games are published and distributed now.

Rules are frequently distributed online in advance of the game (for free, I might add) to generate interest or afterward for support reasons. I for one would not want to pay for essentially a preview of the rules before buying the game. Post a demo (include the first page of rules if you like) and then, if the customer is interested, they will buy the full game.

Actually, I already sell RPG PDFs at RPGNow. (Ronin Arts, one of the top publishers on the site.) I was just saying that my direct experience will selling downloadable board and card games is extremely limited.

Those interested in selling at RPGNow should check this link:
