Free Industry Statistics ?

Hey Hey

I was reading through these forums and realized that if I am planning on self publishing my game I should really work up a business plan. One aspect of the plan is describing the current market. To do so I have been looking for free industry statistics, particuarly on trading cards or ccg games.

I have found some basic ones that describe 'toy' segments in the market, but I wondered if anyone here had access to some statistics or any suggestions.

Thanks

For about $8.00 (including postage) you can get a copy of Comics and Games retailer. It will give you the most recent month's sales figures.

If you contact the publisher, I think you can ask for a back issue to. I think the April [?] issue has a summary of statistics for last year (the State of the Game Industry report).

That's the best source of details on current sales and sales from the past year.

Hope that helps.

Darke -- do you actually have a Wiki?

Info on Comics and Games Retailer Magazine would be good for a wiki, because it's not available at book stores. It's subscription only, and typically only people with big game stores even know about it.

Certain brick and mortar stores get it for free. A year's subscription is around $40.00 if you don't get it for free. Single issue cost is around $5.00 with up to $3.00 tagged on for shipping when you get a single issue. Clearly it is in your best interest to be a brick and mortar store and/or to subscribe.

Krause Publishing publishes CGR magazine.

They take a fairly unscientific survey of game store owners every month based on people who send in survey cards. They then run some analytics on the data to tell you the best selling miniatures, ccgs, rpgs, etc. in a variety of categories. I can't remember if there is much data on traditional board games.

CGR magazine is a great place to find out not only what's selling and how much, but to get articles on setting up and running a store, on distribution, etc.

The annual State of the Gaming Industry issue is really useful for projections on industry size, industry growth and contraction in various sectors, etc.

Again, I don't know if I'd call the data scientific, but it's definitely about the best stuff around for many purposes.
