General questions about board games

Hey Guys,

I'm new at this forum and I'm really glad that I found it!
I have read some threads and I noticed that there are
many experts in board games among you.

Just a quick introduction of my plans:
I'm in a process of creation an economic game, quite
similiar to Cashflow 101 / 202 of Robert Kiyosaki, but
much more advanced/complicated and simply
better looking .

I would appreciate very much if someone could answer
at least a few of my questions:

1. Do you suggest that I should get a patent for my game?
2. Do you suggest going for Wal-Mart or selling via www like
Kiyosaki is doing it at the moment?
3. How difficult is it to get to Wal-Mart and other supermarkets?
4. Do anyone know an average sale of such games? For
example 5000 copies or more like 50000 copies nationwide?
5. Can anyone suggest a cover price for such a game? Kiyosaki's price is $199 but he has something that I don't - reputation.

Thanks!

Sebastian

Here's a quick reply, but you'll no doubt get much better replies from other people ...

I do however recommend your read the Game Inventors Guidebook by Brian Tinsman

no

Look for a game publisher that seems to support your type of game and make a pitch to them (e.g. e-mail then with an abstract and asking whether they would be interested in more information)

My understanding is next to impossible

Not really. 500 sounds ambitious.

I sure hope they aren't american dollars! I don't know your game, but look at games like Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride and Puerto Rico as games priced for the game industry. I think the Game Inventor's Guidebook talks about needing to sell something for 8 times the production costs, but my memory might be out ...

Good luck!

General questions about board games

Hi abdax !
I have Kiyosaki 's game (Cashflow 101) and read his books.
IMHO, his game is not 'just' a board game, but an implementation of his 'idea'/'concept' (about passive income, etc), so that's why the price is so high.
As a board game, I will say that the game is boring. But as a teaching material (about his concept), the game (to me) is very good.
Yes, his board game is back-up by the reputation of his concept, his books and Kiyosaki himself, give trainings everywhere.

So, in this case, IMHO just seperate his board game with another 'real' board game (Puerto Rico, Catan, etc).
As I know, the price of a board game (with a lot of materials) usually around $30-$50 at most.

About another question, I agree with GeminiWeb answer.

Good luck with your game !
