So I am very new at the process of creating a board game. Lately I have been thinking increadibly hard about an idea I have been toying around with for years. Beyond the game mechanics and board selection what else should I be thinking about to bring my idea to life? Also is there a way for me to check if this idea already exists, like some sort of board game registry?

Boardgamegeek.com has the

Boardgamegeek.com has the most complete listing available, however since there are so many different games it may be easier to ask on the forums there than to try to search it out yourself. I wouldn't be overly concerned about duplication to begin with- your game will invariably share some aspects with other games already available.

as far as other steps, i'd suggest picking up a book or two on the subject (search for board game design at amazon.com).

additionally, i recommend you make a prototype of your game, and playtest as much as possible with as many different people as possible to ensure everything works the way you want it to.
