Hi everyone!

I am rather new to the forums and with this being my third post I thought I might make a positive contribution to the community.

What contribution? You might ask. Well, as I was wondering the expanses of google the other day I stumbled upon a blog by Ian Schreiber. You might know him as one of the writers of Challenges for Game Designers. The blog can be found here: http://gamedesignconcepts.wordpress.com/

Here you will find a 20 module game design course. Originally, sign-up were for 2009 but it has since been released for public consumption and for free! But why am I telling you fine ladies and gentlemen all this? Well, for one the course focuses on board game design so chances are it is right up your alley. More importantly, the course itself is best taken with others!

Who then would like to take the plunge with me into the unknown? The course has significances for both the new and experienced designer. I would suggest that we do one module a week for a total of 20 weeks but this is rather flexible.

If you are interested or have any questions or comments at all, post bellow! I am looking forward to hearing what you think and starting an adventure with those of you who are interested.

I'm a fan of that book and

I'm a fan of that book and actually used it a few times for my own home-brewed game design courses I taught in free school settings and public workshops.

I've seen the classes, and have seriously considered them several times over the years. I'm currently on the road and have limited access to my game bits and other design tools, but in mid-December I ought to be settled down. Think you can hold off until then to start up a formal schedule, Garage Games?

Actually, the original plan

Actually, the original plan was to start in December as I am also quite busy this month. I have no problem waiting until mid-December. It will also give us a bit more time to gather interest for the course. I am looking forward to discussing it further when you get settled in. :)

I'm in!

Count me in! I've read several books on game design, but from what I see in these classes I think participating in a group setting would benefit me greatly. I am also interested in eventually teaching game design, so going through a course would help me better understand the pedagogy involved.

Let me know if you need any assistance in setting up forums, discussion spaces, etc.

Yay! Interest-explosion! I

Yay! Interest-explosion! I will be jotting everyone's preferred method of contact down for when the course starts. So let me know either here or by private message how to contact you when we get closer to the start date. Right now I am thinking starting on the 15th of December but that date is just a placeholder.

As for forums/discussion boards we could get a temporary one up and running closer to the date. However, I was going to ask richdurham about getting a sub-forum on here. I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks!

Garage Gamer,

I'm currently in the throes of developing two two games and assisting with the design aspect of one of them. I look forward to the course and will definitely provide feedback.

Cheers,
Joe

Sub-thread

I can hook you guys up with a sub-forum for this, no problem. It's a worthy cause, and is significantly relevant to this site's purpose!

You're starting on the 15th of December for sure? I will make the board active a week before that.

A different free course

EdX is running a free (MOOC), basic game design course (halfway through right now). courses.edx.org

None of my game design courses are free any more (https://www.udemy.com/u/drlewispulsipher). But many of the free-preview parts are on my "Game Design" channel on YouTube. These are screencasts (videos). http://www.youtube.com/user/LewGameDesign

Hey guys, An update coming

Hey guys,

An update coming your way.

Thanks to richdurham, we are able to have the course hosted right here on the Board Game Design Forums, which is great news!

As for the starting date of the course. We will be starting on the 15th of December. We will be going through the modules at the rate of 1 module per week.

As for sign-ups, I would like to keep a list of people taking the course but I am not going to be strict with the sign-up dates and would like to see everyone having a chance to participate even if they are unable to commit to the whole thing.

More information to come soon.

Do I understand it correctly

Do I understand it correctly that this is meant as a commitment device to go through the whole course? Or are there team-tasks?

I would definitely join!! but only starting from the second week / after christmas..

Hey Telci, I am not sure if I

Hey Telci,

I am not sure if I 100% understand your question but there will be a sign-up sheet for those participating but you can sign-up anytime after the the course has started. That being said there are team tasks in the later modules.

We would love to have you and the first two weeks of the course requires minimal time and more focused on readings/playing games. Interaction and challenges etc all come in around week 3. So while I recommend joining us from the start to get the most out of the experience there would be no problems by waiting after Christmas.
