hey everyone,

right guys, im just starting out into the games design world. im looking for some help on an up coming project.

Basically I need to create and interactive strategy map.

imagine a world map, broken down into a hexagon grid. 4-6 players e.g. corporations start at different points in the world.

Basically I want to be able to select the player then select the grid that they have taken over, with either a colour or a 3d chess piece of there logo type design.

I really need help on the software and basics to get this kind of game set up ?

any constructive help would be much appreciated please don't flame me for being new.

Thanks
Martin

Welcome!

Welcome aboard Martin :)

I could be mistaken, but from first glance I'd say you need to plan this idea out a bit more. I'm basing this purely on the fact that I can't quite understand what it is you're trying to get help with. I'll take a stab at it, but like I said, I'm unclear as to what your question really is or what the problem you're facing is...

Am I right in thinking that you have the world and then a number of hexagon spaces (let's just call it 20, for the sake of it)? And then you need a way to signify what space belongs to each player?

If this is the case, then the two options I see are you either a) Give each corporation a set of tiles which they place over each piece when they take over it; or b) Have each grid/section marked by a name or number, which has a corresponding card, so the player who takes over a section can find the corresponding card and add it to their hand.

The problem with OPTION B is that at a glance it's unclear who is in control of what sections. Whereas tokens will make it clear at a glance the separation of the board.

If you can elaborate your problem a bit further it might be easier to help :)

I do apologise, Well leeton

I do apologise,

Well leeton you pretty much hit the nail on the head,
I need to have a world map, then add on the hexagon grid.
Then for each player I would like a tile or 3d token to move across the grid to signify the ownership of that grid.
I need to be able to select the player then be able to move that in a direction on the hex grid.

What my question really was about would be what's the best software to use and some hints and tips on how to do it :p.

Digital vs Physical

Having done a little digital game development, I would recommend something like GameMaker for this as it's straightforward and quite visual. However, creating something like you're describing takes a lot of work, why don't you make a physical prototype of your game first, work out all the mechanics and then create it digitally when you're happy with the design?

You'll be throwing out a lot of ideas as you progress, and it's much easier to do that when you're using bits of paper than with a big ol' codebase and a ton of assets. Plus, as you play your paper prototype you'll grow to love your game, which will give you the drive to get the digital version finished.

Thanks Jhrrsn. I have

Thanks Jhrrsn.

I have downloaded game maker, for the last day or so I have been going thro the tutorials to help pick up the lingo etc.

I do have a paper prototype,
Il break down the project a bit more, see if it leads a bit more insight.

Basically the project is for my friends laser quasar business, he is having members nights where he has built up a paper version of the game to represent what I've already explained.( world map, grid references, corporations etc) from this point he's asked if I could help with a digital version of the game that he can use as he knows I'm training to be a game designer.

Any idea of where I can pick up some good coding language to ur?
