As the title of this thread suggests, I am looking for a BETTER name for my game's 2nd Expansion. The game is called "Tradewars - Homeworld" and the current name of the 2nd Expansion is "Red Alert".

So let me explain how I get this name:

  1. This Expansion features an EXCLUSIVE role known as the "Security Officer".
  2. From a meta game stand point-of-view, players track the attitude each opponent has towards them.

Why I call it "Red Alert" is because HOSTILE players are RED... And when you are being attacked by a hostile opponent, then the starship raises the condition to "Red Alert".

IDK maybe someone has a better idea for the Expansion's NAME or a better name for the ROLE (instead of Security Officer)...

Input would be much appreciated!

Forgot to mention

For those who are not aware "Tradewars - Homeworld" is a Deck-Building Game (DBG) like Dominion... It draws inspiration from Dominion, the original DBG, San Juan (Player Roles) and Magic: The Gathering.

It is a Science Fiction game which has a setting of another world similar to Earth called Terra Prime. On Terra Prime there are four (4) competing Megacorporations that control the planet... Each of these corporations have taken to the stars in search of a rare metal known as quickSilver.

Like the Cold War (on Earth), these Megacorporations are forced to deal with each other because of each corporations capabilities in stellar exploration.

As such players can become allies or enemies... It's up to the player how they want to play the game!

This specific Expansion (2nd) is all about having rules to govern dealing with the opposing players...

Note: Player's can be one (1) out of five (5) attitudes =

-2 Hostile > -1 In between > 0 Neutral < +1 In between < +2 Allies

I was more thinking about "Star Trek" and Captain Kirk saying: "Red Alert!" But I get where you are coming from, maybe Command & Conquer would make you think about THAT game...

I don't want to reference C&C... Like I said, I was more thinking about "Star Trek"...

Do you have any better ideas???

C & C is so old though. Also,

C & C is so old though. Also, Red Alert is tthe secondary title of both games which would not lead to any confusion.

Homeworld - Enemy Front

I also like this too... It oozes of politics and meta gaming!

If anyone has other suggestions, feel free to comment!

Homeworld: Hostile

Homeworld: Hostile Intent

Homeworld: Breach (going for "security breach" but sexier. idk if there's even a security breach that happens)

Homeworld: Discourse

I agree that "security officer" sounds really... flat. Sounds like they're patrolling an intergalactic mall.

I like "Warden" or "Chieftain" or something more powerful. Or you could go militaristic and give them something like "Security General" or "Surveillance Captain"?

Play around with word roots, you'll find something neat!

Yesterday's Star Trek officers have become today's Paul Blart, Mall Cop 2. How about Enforcer, Peacekeeper, Guardian, Praetorian, Warden, Redcap, Conflict Negotiation and Wellness Officer . . .

For the name:

Homeworld: Special Victims Unit
Homeworld: The Black Box (comes in a black box, referring to the "black box" on airplanes, therefore implying risk or destruction)
Homeworld: Zero Point
Homeworld: Red Flag
Homeworld: Red Jacket, Brown Pants

I agree about the C&C issue. There's at least a decade worth of computer gamers who associate Red Alert with some of the best LAN games they've ever played.

I thought of C&C immediately when questccg said "Red Alert". The game is familiar enough for people to reference C&C.

As far as the name:

-Homeworld: Red on Deck
-Homeworld: Code Red
-Homeworld: Red Death
-Homeworld: Conflict

I dunno...just a few suggestions.

Okay based on some suggestions...

I would use the ROLE of: "Security Liaison" and the NAME of "Code Red".

Let me explain why I like "Code Red"... On the game pad there are five (5) colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Blue.

Red means "Hostile", Blue means "Ally".

The cool thing about this is is when you ROLL DICE in combat, the attacker rolls the "RED" initiative dice and the defender rolls the "BLUE" initiative dice.

"Tradewars - Homeworld": "Code Red".

I think it's cool... And I don't really care that it will make people think about "Mountain Dew". I really like the sound of it, plus the relationship with the game pad and dice makes it feel "integral".

Like I said "Code Blue" would be an encounter with an Ally or an ally needs your help, etc. "Code Green" a friendly encounter with another Megacorporation, "Code Yellow" a neutral encounter, etc. All the way to "Code Red" meaning an encounter with a Hostile entity!

And since these are used to "replace" meta game with something more structured, I think it's all fitting. Notice that the meta game will still exist, but the components in the expansion will set down some rules about how player interact with each other (depending on the attitude of their opponent...)

Also searching on Google, I find "Code Red" to be associated with "Hospital Emergency codes" (Emergency Preparedness) which I think is cool. Because it could be associated with starships and encounters also (in my mind...)

Update: The "Security Liaison" would have the same rank as an "Admiral" so Rank = 7. This is important because this expansion of the game will introduce the Role-based Turn Order. Instead of being normal sequence of play, each player taking their turn, the Role-based Turn Order means that the order is defined by the ROLES chosen on that turn...

It's a game variant for more experienced players which requires some advanced thought into knowing which role you are choosing on that turn.

Plus, you have the whole association with the code red lockdowns announced whenever there is a school shooting and the code red drills that some schools are doing. Between that and the Mountain Dew, teenagers will be pretty psyched.

I actually did think about the Mtn. Dew drink when I thought of the name. Since the reference was something non-game related and there were other definitions for "Code Red", I thought it would click.

With Red Alert, there are enough gamers out there that will relate the name to the C&C game and immediately think it was a RTS game. Obviously, it is not. Since Code Red is a drink and not a game, the separation seems ok.

I suppose I suggested something good, ya?

other names to consider

for the roles:

Sentry
Sentinel

For the game:

Homeworld: Hostile Encounters (along the lines of Tuscansun's suggestion)

However, I will agree that "Code Red" sounds great too...and works well with the color-code idea.

2 Cents...

DEFCON 1 (5 to 1; 5 being the lowest threat)
Or just "DEFCON".
