Hello, Canyoncl here

I am wondering I have heard that the "hook" of a game is extremely important, but I am wondering as it appears different things can "hook" people, things like "art, story, gameplay videos" and other people just play the game then decide if they like it, I would like to ask what they mean by "hook" and how to create this in my current game ideas, for me when I look at a game box art and the actually games name is extremely important when I am trying to find a new game, I would like to know what "hooks" some of you guys (and girls)
Thank you in advance

I consider hook to be

I consider hook to be something that your game has which appeals to the players. This is very subjective, and mainly decided by the type of player/audience you are targeting with your game.

It should be noted however, that marketing does not count as a hook. Yes it does get attention, but is far from a hook.

A hook should be something which players come back for, something which keeps their interest.

For example, a game where you play as a monster rampaging a city, and the monster which strikes the most fear wins

The hook can be the customizability of the monsters which can differentiate between look and statistics or even both, the combat system in the event 2 monsters clash, the theme itself which is an obvious draw to fans of giant monsters, as a few hook examples i can quickly think of.

But with all that said, there is no "official list of hooks". If there was, there wouldn't be any variety anymore

For me the best hook has

For me the best hook has always been a really strong main theme which the game's mechanics and other aspects reinforce.

I guess fantasy vs. reality is also a big dividing factor. I wouldn't touch a rally game on my own in a million years, but add a post-apocalyptic aspect to the same game and we'll talk.

And to some just a mention of Cthulhu is enough to go rapid kickstarter spree.
