"I want to make a little game." How it all begins...

Hey again guys. Going to keep it brief.

I've been working on my next project after finishing the last, although this project I technically had going before the game I just finished. It all started out with myself groaning "I'm tired of spending months on a single game. I want to make a simple one for fun!" one morning. As it went, the game was just a tactical team-fighting game similar to Summoner Wars or League of Legends. It started out like a really watered down version of the two as I wanted...but then I got to adding more and more elements. Eventually I gave up and started working on my last project, which I actually did finish.

Has anyone else faced this, where a game you intended to make short and simple blew way out of proportion?

Oh yes...

Usually it happens because you have so many ideas for the game that you start to get overwhelmed... Or you're just excited and keep adding things! What I've learned is to make a plan. Sketch out, write down, talk out loud, whatever helps you orginize your thoughts, the things the game NEEDS. Whether it be cards, board size, etc. It may not be exciting at first but it helps tremendously in the long run. Once you've ruled out ideas and concepts then start adding in the WANTS on the game and critique them to fit your game well.

Framework

It's important to rememember that when creating a game, you establish a framework for that game. A framework includes victory conditions, a few mechanics, and the required components to fit the theme. Be aware that if you're going simple, your probably going abstract. Create mechanics, victory condition, and components that fit "simple" which means "few" (ie. one vicoty condition, one mechanic, a few components). Once a framework is established, youw ill be forced to create a game within that framework.
