Hi all,

Well I am progressing pretty nicely on "Tradewars - Homeworld" a Deck-Building game mixed with CCG elements.

I wanted to know you opinion on the CCG battles: Namely would you think it would be a good idea to introduce the concept/mechanic of INSTANT cards into the Deck-Building game?

In my game, Deck-Building replaces MtG land cards (your source of mana). BUT I was thinking "What if players could play instant cards during the game while battling their opponents???"

I would have to playtest the concept - BUT my early impression would be this card mechanic could add some surprise to the starship battles.

Let me know what you think!

Yes

I don't know what your definition of "instant" is in this one - are you talking about playing a card on your opponent's turn?

If so, then yes. Instants make the game more than taking turns while playing solitaire, in my opinion. You want some way for players to interact and react.

Played at the right time

Yes - cards that are played at any given time (Your own turn or an opponent's turn).

Usually Deck-Building Game (DBG) cards are designed to interact with players *on their turn*. I don't think I have seen a DBG that allows a player to play cards on an opponent's turn... (Correct me if I am wrong)

Note: I have not explored all DBGs, so I could be wrong about this.

Explicitly I don't believe you can do this in Dominion. It kinda would be MtG (Magic) meets Dominion... So you would have a NEW pile to *buy* from called the "Research Facility" and it would provide the player with *INSTANT* cards (that can be played at any time). Obviously these would be technological advances other than Starships, Crews and Weaponry. You could keep them in your hand - until the right time arises to play them...

Note 2: I was finding that the game had a *missing element* about half-way through a game. Perhaps instant cards will fill that void...

Note 3: As with most DBGs, when you *buy* the card, it goes into your discard pile... Once you shuffle your deck, then you might get the card to hold in your hand (to play at any time)...

Couple examples of Instant card

An example that I had would be the following:

-Doomsday Device: When both players roll 6, the opposing player's starship is destroyed.

I was inspired by the Doomsday Clock from http://www.thebulletin.org/timeline. Basically if both players roll 6, the total is 12 and the card takes effect.

What is COOL is if BOTH players decide to play that card! One player thinks he is clever - but to his surprise so does his opponent... Both starships are destroyed.

-Deflector Shield: When played, the opposing player's starship takes the damage.

This one is another cool example. Why? Because if BOTH players use this card, it's damage as usual! This is a pretty good *Take That* card.

I'm not sure of the best strategy *using* the instant cards. One thing is for certain, if you hold too many in your hand that will slow your progress earning quickSilver (qS = Money). So something else to balance with the remainder of the game...

Note: Originally I had thought that these card would be PART of the configuration process of starships. BUT when I thought about it more, it became more apparent that these cards should be *one shot* rather than persistent (if configured). Obviously all the instant cards are useful, some more, some less (because of conditions). But if they are *quick* and sorta play-as-you-go and therefore they simply cost a little to have in your hand (because you don't trade them for quickSilver).

Instant speed effects

Seems like a cool twist to me. Assuming standard deckbuilding rules of fill-up-to-5 cards in hand at the end of your turn, an instant would trade next turn's hand size for suprise/responsiveness,

I like the idea!

Well the DBG is used to drive the CCG aspect. And ya rules are default fill-up-to-5 cards. But you can use the Monarch role to augment that to 7 cards (+2). So you would keep an instant in your hand for later use. The tradeoff? Well you earn less income because you are not "selling" that 5th or 4th card.
